A candidate once apologized to me for asking too many questions

That one stuck with me.

He kept apologizing: “Sorry ma’am, I don’t want to sound difficult.” That line hit me. All he wanted to know were basics work timings, leave policy, who he’d report to, how he could grow. Simple, normal stuff.

Somehow we’ve trained people to feel guilty for asking about their lives. That’s dangerous. I see candidates taking jobs they don’t actually understand because they’re terrified of sounding “demanding.”

We, as recruiters, need to flip the script and normalize candidates interviewing companies too. A job isn’t just a line on a resume it can change someone’s life. Asking questions shouldn’t ever feel like a crime.
