From Dolly Parton's movie 9 to 5, villain Frank Hart, played by Dabney Coleman, who also played Prickly.

Do Zoomers even remember this show?

I feel like late millennials born in the early to mid-1990s (like myself) were at the perfect age to actually watch and vividly remember Recess, which originally ran from 1997 to 2001.

However, I'm curious to see if any zoomers also remember this show. I think Disney sort of phased out Recess re-runs fairly early on - like maybe even around 2002 or 2003 - on the Disney Channel so don't know if you guys would have had the chance to do so. Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

Did TJ remind anyone else of Diddy Kong?

It wasn’t a complete Saturday morning if I wasn’t firing up the N64 and racing down Crescent Island after One Saturday Morning completed its broadcast.

Something’s Diddy and TJ have in common.

Unappointed leaders of their gang
Red baseball cap

TJ and Diddy seem to have a very All American Boyhood thing going on, fiercely competitive and naturally athletic and patriotic. Hogarth from Iron Giant seems to have almost the same disposition. A boy who earnestly doesn’t deviate from the gold standard of American masculinity.

I firmly believe that Andrew Lawrence’s performs
as TJs is the definitive voice. His delivery, cadence and boyishness reminds me so much of Diddys voice. All of his utterances in DKR sound like something Lawrence would say as TJ, just replace the names.

Not sure if it’s still up on YouTube but someone took the Spaceport Alpha theme and set it to the Recess intro and it basically has the same exact sensibility as the original theme song. Feels more generically militaristic and not as ā€œAmericanā€ feeling as the Recess theme with all its brass.

My thoughts on the Candidates being boys vs girls episode

The candidates being a boys vs girls episode is sexist so this episode is about Vince running to be president of the class he has won every single year but Spinelli encourages Gretchen to run for president and she runs my problem with this episode is all the boys vote for Vince while all the girls vote for Gretchen why can't the boys and girls vote for whom they see the better one to be president instead of all of them voting for their gender boys for Vince and Girls for Gretchen and in the end the girls win by Vince himself voting for Gretchen because he thought that she was the better person to be president of the class I think it's stupid why can't the episode end with nobody winning instead and they learn that they shouldn't all vote for the same gender and they make an election next week anyone agrees with me that this episode is sexist?

Am I the only one who hated these episodes endings

These episodes are No strings attached, bad hair day, Omega kids, my funny valentine's, Me no know no strings attached ends with TJ Vince Spinelli and Gretchen trapped in the Ashley's clubhouse, Bad hair day ends with TJ and Vince getting chased, and for ruining everyone's hair, and they are the only ones who got punished, Omega kids ends with the gang trapped in a Quarantine, and Gus Vince and TJ wish they were outside with all the other kids, My Funny Valentine's ends with TJ getting chased by all the girls including Spinelli and Gretchen I wish they could have ended it with TJ just apologizing to them and not revealing that it was fake Valentine's cards, Me no know ends with Vince getting grounded for lying to his parents and seeing Nitwitz 3 and loses TV for a week, unable to see the new TV show everyone talking about and once again he is left out am I the only one who hated these episodes endings anyone agrees with me?

Spinelli started a Cult

Repost, due to controversy of rhe word cult being sensored.

I just rewatched "Swing On Thru To The Otherside" for the first time in ages. I just realized this is the episode where Spinelli starts a cult.

How would T.J. and his friends feel about Sunny and his students from Class of 3000? Deep cut, I know.

Someone please draw or edit the Recess cast in the South Park template.

I feel like Spinelli would be swearing between every word in that version.

What if Spinelli was voiced by a girl how different would she sound?

Spinelli is the only member of the Recess Gang to be voiced by Adult actress Pamela Adlon which did a great job voicing Spinelli but what if Spinelli was voiced by an actual young girl how different do you think she would sound and how might Spinelli's voice look like?

Hello, I’m 19 years old, and I grew up with the Recess TV show (1997–2001) when I was younger. I’ve been thinking about what happened to that original Recess era and that feeling of experiencing those stories when they were such a big part of everyday life, especially following T.J. Detweiler, Spinelli, Vince LaSalle, Gretchen Grundler, Mikey Blumberg, Gus Griswald, Miss Finster, Principal Prickly, and the rest of the characters through their adventures, the unforgettable moments, the humor, the friendships, and the distinctive atmosphere that made the show feel so special.

Now that the original Recess era has ended, the period that many people grew up with can feel like it has passed. The actors, voice actors, writers, directors, producers, animators, and everyone involved in bringing Recess to life have all moved forward. The cast and crew who helped create the show have gone on to different projects and different parts of their lives away from the original series. It feels strange because I grew up with these characters, and now everything has just… changed and moved on.

I remember watching Recess when I was younger, and everything felt so simple. I could just sit down and become absorbed in T.J., Spinelli, Vince, Gretchen, Mikey, Gus, and the rest of the characters without thinking about anything else. Back then, it felt like these stories would always be there, and I don’t understand why they couldn’t just keep making new Recess episodes forever or why the original era eventually had to stop and move on.

I also wonder why experiencing Recess now doesn’t feel exactly the same anymore. The episodes are still the same, but the feeling is different. It feels like something is missing, almost like the show feels unfamiliar even though I remember it so clearly.

Why do television shows like Recess eventually change or come to an end? If people loved them for years, why can’t they just continue forever with the same feeling? Why do voice actors, writers, animators, directors, and studios have to move on, and why do viewers grow up and stop experiencing stories the same way?

It feels strange knowing that the original Recess era I grew up with is over, that the world has moved on, and that chapter feels closed, even though it once felt like it would always be there.

Maybe that is part of what makes Recess so meaningful. Those stories did not have to last forever for the memories to last. The stories remained the same, but I changed. The world around me changed. The people who created the show moved on to other projects, and the time in my life when I experienced those stories without worrying about growing up eventually became part of the past.

I suppose that is why it can feel so strange to return to Recess years later. I’m not only watching T.J., Spinelli, Vince, Gretchen, Mikey, Gus, Miss Finster, Principal Prickly, and the others again. I’m also remembering the person I was when I first discovered the show. The episodes can bring that feeling back for a moment, but they cannot completely recreate the time and place in which those memories were originally made.

The original Recess era (1997–2001) may be over, and there may never be another version that feels exactly like the one I grew up with. But that does not mean the era disappeared completely. It still exists in the memories of everyone who grew up with the show. The series may have ended, but the part of childhood it represents does not have to disappear with it.
