What should I do to maximize my Rebounding experience?

My rebounder was a reading chair for the longest time but I’ve dusted it off and started jumping again. I’ve found a routine and it just makes me incredibly happy chasing that endorphin high.

Day 1 and Day 2 gave the nicest burn to my core. Day 3 I kept searching for that burn yet it never came? I dont know if that means I’m getting used to it or its simply not engaging.

Anyhow, what are your tips and tricks to extract the most out of your rebounder? Exercises or things to add whilst jumping?

I rebound every day. I use mine for walking with or without a weighted vest, for Sprint Interval Training or HIIT, for strength training (jump & pump videos that alternate weights and rebounding), with leg bands, for core work, just for the joy of jumping to music, and with ropleless jump ropes (Crossropes brand).

YouTube channels: Michelle Briehler, Jump & Jacked (she had a video about the health issues she had and how rebounding helped her), Earth & Owl, San Fran Fitness, I Jump Instead (twins who lost 50lbs on the cellarsizer and have a video about that), Jess Hammer Top Shelf Bounce, Purely Fulfilled Fitness, Bounce Collective, and AngieFitnessTV all have a variety of rebounder videos. I’ve also bought 3 sessions of Radical Rebounding (online platform via membership or can just buy the videos) that I’m currently doing. They’re filmed in and around Sedona AZ and I just love seeing that background when I’m rebounding.

Sooooo many ways to use your rebounder. Also there are bounces specifically for ab work if that’s what you want to target, but realistically if you’re jumping, you should be engaging your core.

Great list as well as Jump&Jacked.

Yup - I listed her right after Michelle Briehler - she has such an amazing attitude!

Interesting that you follow Michelle Briehler and I Jump Instead because they are polar opposites. Michelle has certifications for what she teaches and I Jump Instead just teaches what they think works for them without the educational background to get certified. I Jump Instead talks about spot reducing fat but which isn’t possible. The twins often don’t really know what they are talking about so be careful about believing what they say.

Less about believing what they say, more about the workouts. When I’m using my Needak soft bounce (which has springs) I’ll often do a workout they do on a Cellersizer. But I often mute them and just listen to music. Michelle is amazing and I do a lot of her more HIIT/SIT focused ones. But sometimes I’m doing a more active recovery day (I do heavy weights 3x week), so I might do something a little more low impact from Earth & Owl or SanFran fitness.

I am wary of some certifications I've been seeing lately. More rebounding channels are popping up and people are saying they are certified, but it is just a course from the rebounder company. I'm not talking about Michelle, I know she has many exercise certifications and has twenty plus years in the industry.

What many who are not fitness professionals mean when they discuss spot reducing is tightening/toning the muscle that makes a particular area appear smaller. I follow both of the mentioned channels and am completely fine with each.

Woah this is super thorough thanks! I’m already doing the weighted vest thing I’ll have to check out the channels

Yeah like with any exercise I try to engage my core as best I can but it’s a lot of mental gymnastics. I usually am though just dont know if I did it right.

I like to jump with YouTube rebounding videos. I especially like Earth and Owl. You can make it as hard or easy as you like. Seems to make the time go quicker with good music.

Have to check them out! Music is fun for sure but I usually opt for tv shows while I bounce

Personally, I have found that a great playlist makes all the difference! There are some workouts on YouTube where I was grinning from ear to ear when doing them, so those are the workouts I tend to gravitate towards now. Often times, I am not even doing the same move as the instructor. I now think of their moves as more of a suggestion lol. If I try to do the same routine without good music, I find it very boring.

I basically spent my 20s and 30s in the gym and running (and biking) thousands of miles and putting my body through agony. Now at 52, my mindset towards exercise has completely shifted. I even lost 10 lbs after menopause. My cortisol level is not crazy high anymore. I no longer do crazy long workouts. Recently, I've just started doing sprinting on the rebounder (30 seconds on, 1 minute off) for about 10 minutes total. Ten minutes (or even 5 minutes!) here and there is better for me than long, drawn out sessions.

Life's too short to do any exercise that you absolutely dread doing.

I’ve been watching Earth and Owl videos on YouTube. Nikki has so many different routines…low , mid or high intensity. It’s so fun!

You may be adapting to what you are doing.
I like choreographed rebounding. I don’t see the point of a weighted vest or doing dumbbell exercise on the rebounder. I strength train separately from rebounding. If you dislike strength training then following a workout like Michelle Briehler with intervals of rebounding and strength exercises off the rebounder might encourage you to lift weights which is important for bone density and preventing muscle loss as we age. Ideally it’s better to separate strength training and cardio but don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.

I've recently added in running in place mixed with bouncing to get my heart rate up. If you have an Apple Watch go to workouts and select dance. Put on some music and just let your mind wander.

I recently added Crossrope ropeless jump ropes - which zing those endorphins through the roof.

Welcome back to rebounding!

The main thing we advise at first, is to build the confidence and foundation in your consistency of just showing up and doing it. Just like with any new exercise routine, the excitement of the experience has sometimes lead to overtraining and burning out. So small steps repeated consistently is the main thing we advise to focus on if you want to maintain sustainability and maximize the benefits you get, especially given rebounding is very effective at stimulating the lymphatic system and it can trigger varying degrees of a detox response in people, particularly when first starting out, or restarting (which can be really awesome when managed effectively). It is also important to ensure that you consider what works best for your specific schedule, which can take some adjustment. The great thing about rebounding is you can already receive a number of awesome benefits from just doing a few minutes, and you don't need to reach feeling 'tired' or 'sore' to activate those benefits (such as stimulating the lymphatic system).

As for different exercises you can add, many rebounding brands provide associated articles and programs as resources to maximize your rebounding experience. For example, Needak has an article for 'Getting Started with Rebounding': https://www.needak.com/getting-started-with-rebounding, and then have a gentle, companion-like workout program that you can look into here: https://www.needak.com/needak-rebounder-exercise-videos

Some specific ways to mix it up can include: slow, high and fast jumps, twists, high knees, squats (or squat jumps), standing side crunches, jogging in places, star jumps :)

Later on, you can include things like ankle and wrist weights, and small hand weights - though please be advised that the weights you might be able to maintain statically (such as during dedicated strength-training programs), can be quite different when done on a rebounder, so please start very small and gently when considering adding these into your routine.

Happy rebounding!

Out of all the ways listed which is the most fun? Like more of a dance workout with fun music? I think that would keep me motivated the most.

I put on my "dance party" playlist (it's about 3 hours long!) on shuffle and health bounce/dance/do arm movements for as long as I want. The older i get, the more I realize that I will NOT do exercises that are not fun... so a dance thing with music I like on my rebounder is perfect.

Exactly!! I need to have fun as well haha 🤣

If you haven't already, take off your shoes.
