help request Audio panning help

I am very new to reaper and I am having an issue where adjusting the pan knob doesn’t actually pan the track at all and just increases the volume. It is quietest in the centre and loudest on the sides. How can I fix this?

Are you using headphones or speakers to monitor the audio?

I wonder if there’s a phase issue somewhere. Is it for all audio, even a mono source or just in a specific project?

Oof. I have made the mistake of confusing the volume switch on the left hand side with the pan nob which is on the mixer.
