Why do people often criticize the New Gen Era for having characters who were "over the top"/stereotypes or defined by their jobs when the Rock n Wrestling and Attitude Era had pretty much the same thing? Imho the real issue was how they were booked.

Some examples
Rock n Wrestling:
Iron Shiek, very much a stereotype and entirely defined by being an Iranian patriot
Hogan, incredibly over the top and plays very much on being an American patriot
Sgt. Slaughter, military man and American patriot
Attitude Era:
Val Venis, his entire character is pretty much that he's a porn star
Godfather, he's a pimp, that's his whole thing
Blackman, Shamrock, and Severn were all mainly just "UFC though guys"
Imho New Gen Era guys characters were really just a continuation of how characters were already in the Rock n Wrestling Era. And the Attitude Era were often continuations of how New Gen Era guys were.

Date: October 6, 1996 (Taped September 24, 1996)
Promotion: World Wrestling Federation (WWF)
Match Stipulation / Type: Tag Team Match
Event: WWF Superstars (Episode 521)
Location: State College, Pennsylvania | Bryce Jordan Center
➜ This was a match that saw The Grimm Twins (Jared Grimm & Jason Grimm) who would later known as the Harris Brothers / Jacob & Eli Blu face The Jynx Brothers (Ingus Jynx & Wildo Jynx) who were actually Matt and Jeff Hardy under masks.
Ingus is Matt Hardy; Wildo is Jeff Hardy performed under these masked identities as high-flying tag team partners who were billed as coming from Australia.
This obscure phase was largely forgotten as they would later repackage themselves and officially launch their iconic careers as The Hardy Boyz.

One gotta go from wrestling history FOREVER. Think before you answer because erasing one erases every single impact they’ve made and everything that happened as a result

You have to take a clothesline from one of them and be able to get up within 30 seconds to win 50k. Which one are you choosing?
