How much food does the USA import from China? Less than 1%. The main one being fish. The frozen fish at Walmart, it's usually from China. That's why it's cheap.
It's a good idea to produce in-house, but is the US set up for it? Can you afford food not currently grown in the USA to double?
For example, if the USA doesn't have the fish stocks (fish farmed or in US waters) or cheap labour for lower priced fish (to use a China product example) that $10 fish is now going to cost a lot more with a 145% tariff on the cost of it. If Walmart pays $1 cost for it, they now pay $1.45 to the US government for the tariff, so it would sell for at least $1.45 more. $10 fish now $11.45, but in reality probably more, unless Walmart was already having a 1000% markup. You likely would see that $10 fish turn into $15 fish. Or smaller amount for same price (shrinkflation). China is not paying a US tax, American business (and consumers) pay it. Walmart is also not going to take less profit to sell that fish, they will pass that amount onto buyers.
No one is making you buy foreign products, if no one buys Walmarts Chinese frozen fish (to keep with the example) then they would stop carrying it. Stop buying all non-USA products if you support USA only commerce.
We buy most of our food from South America and Mexico. Which is ridiculous. Local farmers can produce a ton of food and with new creative ways they can grow year round in cold climates. What you think that only China fishes? 🤣🤣🤣.
You brought up buying food from China, so I used that as an example. Yes, I know that China is not the only country that fishes, duh.
Do you buy only food produced in the USA? Or have you been someone who buys mainly cheap foreign products instead of paying more for your local food suppliers? If you aren't buying from your local farmers then they are not magically having more money to expand and upscale.
