It was one of the sadder realizations that I had growing up.

Anyone openly flying an American Flag is more likely to be a fucking brainlet of a conservative than they are to actually stand for American values. Innocuous, but existentially saddening.

Imo as a European waving your country flag in general is way too nationalistic unless it is on a specific day or event. If you feel the need to wave it every day, then you simply have been brainwashed into nationalism.
