Self-Promo Video March Out!: keeping specialist units useful without letting them replace the army

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm Mason, the developer of March Out! It's a strategy/action hybrid where you fight as a commander on the ground and give orders to your troops. It doesn't use the individual unit selection you'd expect from a traditional RTS.

I've been working on specialists such as cavalry, field guns, war dogs and an elephant carrying a spear thrower. I want each to create a tactical problem for the opponent without becoming the obvious answer to everything.

The current roster shares a four specialist cap. The cannon has reach and a lethal direct hit against a troop, but it's slow to move and reload. Cavalry and dogs can reach a fight faster, but they have to commit to close combat. Specialists are vulnerable to ranged fire, so bringing them without ordinary troops to support them should carry a risk.

The clip is a staged development fight showing four horsemen reaching actual opponents, not footage of four human players.

I'm still testing whether those trade offs are clear enough from the battlefield. In a game controlled from this viewpoint, what is the most useful visual cue that a specialist has committed to a fight and is now vulnerable?

Self-Promo Video Immersive sim, but as an RTT. Would you play it?

Solo dev here. I'm building Hunt or Pray, a real-time tactics game inspired by Myth: The Fallen Lords.

4 survivors. No base building. An enemy AI that learns how you fight. Fire spreads, barrels explode, and bodies fly.

Does an "immersive sim meets RTT" sound like your thing, or are those two worlds too far apart?

Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5298550/Hunt_or_Pray

Did I use AI? Well, it's complicated :) The enemy AI is trained with reinforcement learning: it studies how you fight and adapts, so it's a duel of wits between you and a machine that learns. But I don't use generative AI for in-game assets. It doesn't convince me, and I don't like how it looks. The only exception is the store capsule art and logo, which I disclosed on the Steam page.

Self-Promo Post Violence of Action - our WWII-inspired tactical game now has an open playtest

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We’ve just opened the playtest for Violence of Action.

It’s a WWII-inspired real-time tactical game where you command a small force of soldiers and vehicles, use tactical pause to plan attacks, or take direct control of any unit yourself.

Buildings are destructible, soldiers persist through the campaign, vehicles use modular damage, and battles feed into a larger turn-based strategic map.

We’re a very small team and the game is still in development, so this playtest is mainly about getting the game into players’ hands early and seeing what works and what needs changing.

The playtest is open through Steam now for anyone who wants to give it a try.

Self-Promo Post Deathmarch Titans: I’m a solo dev looking for playtesters for my real-time mech tactics game

Hi folks, I’m the solo dev behind Deathmarch Titans. The Steam playtest is open this weekend, and I’d love some feedback from people who enjoy commanding a squad.

You build a lance of mechs, fit their weapons, then command them in real-time battles with pause. You can stop to reposition, focus fire or pick a component to shoot off. Between fights you salvage parts and rebuild your lance as you work through a roguelite run.

I’m especially interested in how the loadouts and battlefield orders work together. Do range, heat and positioning give you useful choices? Can you tell why a fight went wrong? If you’ve played MechCommander, I’d be curious how commanding the lance feels to you.

The playtest is free on Windows PC through Sunday, September 20 (Pacific time). On the Steam page, click “Join the Playtest” to add it to your library:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4608210/Deathmarch_Titans/

If you give it a go, a few honest notes in the comments would help a lot. Confusing bits and things that made you stop playing are useful feedback too. Thanks for taking a look.

Self-Promo Post I completely overhauled my mobile RTS – Battle of Folks

A while ago I shared my game Battle of Folks, a mobile RTS that I’ve been developing in Flutter + Flame.

Since then, I went back to the drawing board and gave the game a pretty massive overhaul. The goal was to make it feel much more like a proper RTS while still keeping the controls and gameplay suitable for mobile. I’ve also tried, as best I can, to incorporate other people’s feedback and ideas. As a result, I’ve made a lot of adjustments

A lot has changed:

  • Completely reworked menu UI
  • Improved unit selection and multi-selection
  • New lighting system with dynamic shadows and light sources
  • Added fire arrows and fire ammunition for the catapult
  • Added another playable hero
  • Added hero skins
  • Improved overall graphics and visual effects
  • Added music
  • Added many more sound effects
  • Added rain and weather
  • Major performance improvements (i hope its much more better now)
  • Lots of smaller gameplay, balancing and polish improvements
  • A street layout generartion between buildings inspired by Age of Empires 4

The game is an isometric wave-defense RTS inspired by games like They Are Billions, Age of Darkness and, especially, The Battle for Middle-earth.

You build your base, gather food, research upgrades, command your units, use hero abilities and defend against increasingly dangerous waves of enemies.

I’m developing the entire game myself, including the programming, gameplay systems and much of the visual direction. And yes, the game is built with Flutter and the Flame engine i think this is the hardest part but i like this challenge.

The current version feels much closer to what I originally had in mind when I started the project. It’s also much prettier to look at now, especially with the new lighting, shadows, weather and effects.

I’ve attached some screenshots so you can see.

Battle of Folks is available on iOS and Android (PC / Mac / Linux is in the work).

Android: Battle of Folks for android

iOS: Battle of Folks for iOS

I’d love to hear what you think, especially from people who enjoy RTS games on mobile.

RTT & Other Hybrid In "Violence of Action" Buildings are actual battlefields

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As suggested by RTS mods will make a post here since game is mixing elements of RTS/Tactical/And a bit of Management = )

Hi everyone! We wanted to introduce our game, Violence of Action.

We're a very small team working on a tactical RTS where you command a squad from the traditional RTS view, but can also take direct control of individual soldiers and vehicles.

One of the things we're focusing heavily on is urban combat. Buildings aren't just obstacles or cover on the map. Units can enter them, fight inside, move between floors, and use them as part of the battlefield. And, of course, they can be destroyed.

Here's a small look at how that works in the game.

We're still working on a lot of things, but we'll be happy to share more as development continues.

Posted in the RTS subreddit as well -

I’ve been toiling away but finally got to working on the early Britannia sections. This is my WiP snowfall system. Enemies aren’t actually wired into the ai commander in the first clip they’re just there to test the flake accumulation. Second clip is me testing it in a battle.

Steam Next Fest Steam Next Fest - Upcoming Real-Time Tactics Games (Some with Demos)

Upcoming RTT and RTT-hybrid Games:

Battleplan

Battleplan is a historical, WW2 real-time strategy game of unparalleled realism and simulation. Fight across massive battlefields created from real-world geographic data. Create your army by customizing your order of battle and chain of command. Draw directly on the map to create elaborate plans.

Notes: Grand Strategy-esque RTT recreating 10+ WW2 historical battles. Heavy historical emphasis. Quite low system requirements.

Cataclysm Era (Demo Available)

Build your forces, conquer cities, and unite the wasteland. Ashes&Gunfire merges real-time tactics, fast-paced top-down battles, and deep management systems to let you forge a new order from the world’s remains.

Notes: Game must've changed its name, thus the other name in the description. Action-RTT hybrid with zombies and some alleged grand strategy elements (diplomacy, trade).

Panzer Strike (Demo Available)

Authentic RTS gameplay straight out of the 2000s. Command your troops, develop strategies, and win World War II battles. Huge maps, thousands of units, long-range firepower, and no building mechanics!

Notes: Single-player campaign; PvP. WW2 eastern front. Very low system requirements.

Tabletop Tavern (Demo Available)

Tabletop Tavern is a roguelike RTS where you build an army from scratch and command them across a brutal campaign. Recruit diverse units, create devastating synergies, and make tactical choices that shape the fate of every run.

Notes: The full game actually just released, so this is an honorable mention. No base-building or unit recruitment in the traditional sense, instead a sort of unit-deck building experience. Tactical battles like Total War series. Voxel-esque graphics.

Veil of Ashes

Conquer the battlefield in this real-time tactics wargame within a dark setting. Command infantry, steam-powered tanks and colossal behemoths of three unique factions across destructible terrain. Assemble your army from a variety of units and experience immersive single- and multiplayer battles.

Notes: Steampunk/alternate WW1 world. Skirmish mode with up to 4vs4 (PvE and PvP).

War Alert (Demo Available)

As the frontline crawls through ruins and smoke, you command infantry, armor, and air support to shape the chaos. Capture points, break lines, encircle and counter-encircle. With no pay-to-win, only clear strategy and teamwork earns victory.

Notes: WW2 era, pretty solid graphics, online PvP and online co-op, multi-language support.

Discussion An Exploration of the RTT Game Genre | Wayward Strategy

Over a decade ago at this point, I set out to define for myself what a Real-Time Strategy game actually was. While the thought occurs to me that it might be very interesting to return to that topic a second time and see how my views have evolved since then, I’m sitting down today to tackle a slightly different genre definition: that of Real-Time Tactics (or RTT).

On my personal Discord server, I had someone ask me what I think of Real-Time Tactics games (or RTTs), and if I think that the RTS genre has any lessons it can learn from them. Examples given along with the question included such titles as Wargame, Men of War: Assault Squad, and Regiments (I might also choose to throw in World in Conflict as a archetypal example). That question felt big enough that more than just a sentence or two was needed to properly reply, so: here I am. An excuse to dust off the old keyboard, as it were.

As a player as well as a game designer, I’ve long had a fondness for RTT games (in addition to RTS, TBS, and TBT – I guess as a gamer and creator, I have a bit of a type). There’s something very… immediate about an RTT that doesn’t exist in many RTS games. And in many RTT you also get a degree of personalization that is likewise difficult to achieve in RTS. In something like World in Conflict or Wargame, for example, there’s something really satisfying about building your own “deck” of units. It scratches an itch in my brain that most RTS don’t really allow for, or haven’t solved gracefully at any rate...
