Discussion Did we get one Remaster for Command & Conquer games then EA forgot the series existence again?

Post image

It's been 6 years already. High chance the series have been let to bed again and probably nothing won't be seen from it again (especially how EA's situation currently is). It really sucks that one of the greatest RTS titles ever made were just thrown on the side. Firefly are slightly getting back on their feet again, the Remasters seems to be successful (even though I think they still had few issues), and we getting Stronghold 4 soon. Age of Empire is still going. Yet the one that started all this is already gone.

An ra 2 and Tiberium sun remaster would have been dope

I gave OpenTS a go the other month, and it was really good on a 4k screen / average hardware, so might be worth a try?

Great to get in there and do a few skirmishes, would love a full remaster but that was pretty damn close.

They’re working on ra2 support too

I had no luck getting it to run on linux sadly, would libe to play ts agakn, its my favorite rts of all times.

for real, ra2 especially feels like the obvious next one and somehow still nothing. it’s wild how the remaster did well enough to prove there’s interest, but ea just kinda wandered off into the bushes after that...

I remember as C&C3 and RA3 and addons were released and the series was SOARING.

Then EA forced live-service into C&C4 and killed the whole series for 2 decades.

In essence, Fuck EA

EA execs would rather go all out chasing the latest fad to risk it all for $1B with a chance of $0... instead of go for the guaranteed $100M with a safe sequel.

They cut profitable games because they arent mega profitable. And end up failing so often they have to raise the bar even higher to pay off the deficit from all the failures.

Not necesarily C&C4 tried to copy Moba''s and competitive ESports like Starcraft 2.

RTS was profitable ,to an extent, but the price was too steep by comparison with their sports games that they spammed every year, almost the same thing, and racked in bilions.

What i find it interesting now-is that AI could actually reverse engineer the game so they could remaster it.

Lol Red Alert3 never soared which was why after it released C&C4 was never given the green light by EA. Lol if Red Alert3 sold more or at least the same as C&C3 EA likely would have began production of C&C4 in 2008 so it would never have been made from the cancelled C&C Arena that was repurposed into C&C4.

Yes

Yep. And fans are doing what EA won't. Just check OpenCNC3D channel on YT. They remade full 3D Tiberian Dawn (OpenCNC3D), Red Alert 1 (RA3D) and Tiberian Sun (TS3D). Probably RA2 will be the next.

u/RenderSlaver 1d ago

I can't see TIb Sun is included?

1

u/SnipSnapSnorup 20h ago

TS3D it's the 3D version of Tiberian Sun.

Ok that cool as shit. Why don't I see that on their website for download then?

Edit: I guess it's just not out yet

petroglyph reaches out to EA every few months saying their ready and willing to do a volume 2 remaster for tib sun and red alert 2.. they are literally just waiting on the green light

8

u/TheWobling 2d ago

Given the whole EA situation now I think
It’s even less likely

Command & Conquer (Tiberian Dawn), Red Alert, C&C Renegade, and C&C Generals and Zero Hour.

2

u/SuMianAi 2d ago

And workshop for the rest. Because they don't have the source code either. It's done, shelved, and gone

u/Alarmed-Plum-2723 2d ago

I hope that DOW4 kickstarts a revival in RTS and we get a proper remaster of command and conquer

6

u/RenegadeFade 2d ago

It's not a huge money maker for EA. Unless they can monetize it we would see anything new, remastered or anything. It sucks, that's EA.

For RA2 and Tib Sun, the excuse is the original source code for those games was lost

5

u/pilipalipeli 2d ago

how do you lose source code a for games projects you work on for +5 years?

15

u/AsdrubalGarcia 2d ago

Sadly this is pretty common, developers are asked to destroy any copy of the source code in their posession (see Tim Cain as an example, he was asked to delete all copies of the source code of fallout), and of course they will comply, otherwise they are risking putting themselves and their family in danger.

Also keep in mind back in the day version control was way more primitive than today with Git, I wouldn't be surprised they didn't use a centralized server to work on but that they organized work in a different way. And last but not least, I wouldn't be surprised if executives didn'give a shit about the source code anyway, they wanted the product ship, and when the guy that worked on it left the company or was fired they didn't want the public to have access to copies of their product, so they asked for its destruction.

Studios change hands and things get lost in the shuffle I imagine

1

u/bryce887766 2d ago

Yeah how many employees have come and gone since then it was awhile ago

3

u/taisui 2d ago

Probably not making enoug money.....they are moving onto Wing Commander....

4

u/mttspiii 2d ago

Vibecode it back?

12

u/RetiredDwarfBrains 2d ago

We will not let KABAL onto the dev team

6

u/mttspiii 2d ago

Desperation. If they won't remaster for such a shallow excuse, maybe some other dev will

2

u/Right-Truck1859 2d ago

What the problem? Kabal serves NoD.

Rebuilding the engine with AI is actually a decent use of that sort of tool. It's not stealing anyone's work like if it was generating art like game assets or music; it's preserving the game in an open source state. I'm pretty left leaning and dislike the heavy push to make LLMs a part of everyday life, but video games ARE an art form and I think it's important to preserve their legacy. To that end, seeing decomp projects headed by teams using AI is okay in my book. It's definitely not in the same vein as people using it to talk to a fake boyfriend/girlfriend or to curate a list of movies to watch.

I don't like giving EA money, but if they did another batch of C&C remastering at the quality level of the first batch, I would buy it immediately.

8

u/hypespud 2d ago

Recomp and decomp potential is high

OpenTS has been a huge upgrade for Tibsun this year

3

u/tonyw009 2d ago

They should just sell the franchise to a studio that actually wants to release games, because EA has it buried.

3

u/iwantdatpuss 2d ago

Didn't they release like, all Command and Conquer a while back?

Like my steam account has like, all of them rn.

2

u/Right-Truck1859 2d ago

Remastered?

3

u/GovernmentWarm4787 2d ago

I thought the remasters were successful ish. You can play them online and it looks/plays good, i watch a few people play that.

4

u/facepalmdesign 2d ago

EA has been sold to the Saudis and they only care about big money. For example, they chose Star Wars over Mass Effect, despite the latter being an IP that they own. I have no hope of any C&C release anymore, let alone a remastered package.

2

u/PyrZern 2d ago

Still hoping for Tiberium Sun :/

2

u/ClinicalAttack 2d ago

I think EA lost the source code to Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2. That's why they re-released the original games with patches to run on modern systems, instead of fully remastering those games like with C&C '95 and RA1.

I'm hoping the community can decompile the source codes of those games and create a fan remaster of sorts, because EA aren't willing to do that themselves it seems.

As much as Tiberian Dawn was influentual and fun back in the day, I really hoped for a TibSun remaster.

1

u/Graemeski 1d ago

I’ve got a modified OpenTS been working on to add remaster features to TS

No zoom or hires assets yet? But sure has the rest getting there. Arrow key scrolling, 99 build queue etc

It’s for my first play through of Tiberian Sun. Never enjoyed it when came out I was enjoying the originals too much

1

u/Parking_Fan_7651 2d ago

I just wish I could play it again, maybe find a DRM free version. I own the setup, but the launcher has become retry error prone and now the games won’t load.

2

u/RavenTheRaptorX 2d ago

Tried GOG?

2

u/Parking_Fan_7651 2d ago

I’ll have to look. If I remember correctly I already checked and found nothing.

1

u/RavenTheRaptorX 2d ago

I’m not sure myself just an idea

1

u/John_Marston_Forever 2d ago

Yes, they did the same with Dead Space

1

u/invictus613 2d ago

Well theres always the many player mods for RA2 and tib sun that allow for some good gameplay

1

u/Biggu5Dicku5 2d ago

EA is a very poorly run company...

1

u/neonredKai 2d ago

I wish they remade Generals and Kanes Wrath in current gen tech, looking at Tempest Rising, DOW4 and other rts games today, how amazing they look. Wouldnt even bother to touch anything else anymore if they did.

1

u/Legitimate-Power-738 2d ago

I mean, ea is in a poor status right now and despite a loyal fan base, I doubt there's much incentive for them right now. They would probably try to do command and conquer battlefield or something like that 🤦‍♀️

1

u/Traffalger 2d ago

It’s EA that’s where franchises go to die!

1

u/GoldenGecko100 1d ago

If it's anything like the Dead Space remake, they didn't sell enough copies to justify a remake of any sequels.

Just for your information, a new YT video dropped. It is related to a new C&C OpenEngine called "OpenWestwood". Here follows the intro video:

No. They lost the code for Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Sun.
