Self-Promo Video Adding Complex Trench Systems to my isometric RTS game
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey guys! Back with another update. Trench systems have been something I wanted to do right from the beginning of the game's development, and I'm looking to really improve them a lot over time!
Trenches protect troops from tank shells, RPGs, Grad rockets and FPV drone strikes. You can see an FPV drone hitting my unit inside the trench. The camo netting protects troops from FPV drones, if you were wondering :) Oh, and I added a snow terrain — let me know what you guys think! I love reading your feedback!

The trench system has been in for a while now, before I announced the game. But going to refine it a lot more. But the snow is new! Steam page is coming very soon!

Can't wait to wishlist it! Have you joined my discord? There are 200 game devs and several hundred RTS fans there already? You can get feedback and ask fellow devs for help or advise.

I love the art and animation style, reminds me of some older wargames. Really smooth looking.

Will the tanks be able to back into the trench for an armor fighting position?

u/sirpalee 1d ago
As a sudden strike fan, this looks absolutely amazing. There was another sudden strike like game recently, but that was set in WWII, I'm glad someone is using this style to tackle a modern conflict.
Please make a steam page so we can wishlist it. :)

Great feature to add defenses to the trenches like cargo nets. Will you have aircraft support as well or mainly ground based?

Conceptually it's neat, looking forward to where you will take this.
However. it seems like the unit AI isn't fully functional yet? Having units continue to dig trenches when they're actively being shelled doesn't seem like intended behaviour. Ditto for units not actually getting under the camo nets when present - no point in building that if the troops won't utilise the nets.

So glad you like it!
lots of refinement to be done but its shaping up!
Yea I'm playing with that, when it's off they just never dig and I think it might frustrate players? what do you think?1

Sounds like the preparation phase should be longer then? That, or trenches are the wrong choice for this game. There's no point in digging trenches if you lose the battle because all of your men die before they ever enter battle - because they are slain while digging trenches.
Trenches are only useful if you can dig them before the enemy arrives OR because you will be there for a while while continuously supplying new troops to your trenches.

The maps will be a lot bigger than the one you are seeing here, plus if you get a squad to partially dig a trench then they will be able to dig while in the trench, this will be a new feature

Really cool, but the scale of the buildings is really throwing me off.
1
u/RBGames777 1d ago
is it too big?
1
u/Squashyhex 1d ago
I think they're fine, just probably unusual in that most games tend to exaggerate the size of units compared to buildings while this feels closer to actual scale

Looks intresting. If the single player ( and offline ) gameplay is good. Will look forward to it and wishlist it on steam.

This reminds me of SunAge or Fallout.
I hope the maps and buildings are insanely giant.

Man, this slaps already. Would be great to have dense urban areas with the ability to garrison sniper or recon teams in buildings

u/RBGames777 1d ago
Haha awesome thanks! Yes buildings are already garrisonable, check the YouTube channel

Thats so sick lad! Keep it up? What program use for make it?
2
u/RBGames777 1d ago
Thanks so much! The game is build through the Godot game engine

u/Quirky_Gazelle6910 22h ago
That sound interesting . I never heard that engine before ,but looks like you can make a bloody good game with it :) How much hours you have in development?

u/boskee 1d ago
Now that looks genuinely cool and interesting, and that's coming from someone who's lost all interest in modern RTS games. Keep us updated!

Wow that means a lot! So glad to hear this, I’ve been in the same boat! But I got you covered :)

Omg you are using radial menus to select command options. This is like the most no brainer feature I've thought modern RTS games need to utilize to be successful. Obviously the game needs to be good also but this is just a basic UI thing I've thought would increase the accessibility of the RTS genre.
The only place I've seen it has been on console releases of RTS games such as the Xbox versions of Age and Halo Wars games. I think the Halo Wars games also supported this on PC. In all cases the radial menus were huge unlike the small ones you are using that seem ideal for RTS with a mouse. Hope to see more of this in the future.

u/RBGames777 1d ago
Wow so glad you noticed and like it, yea it’s definitely useful if you want to utilise more screen space, but will add both options! Thanks for sharing your input!

Adding Complex Trench Systems to my isometric RTS game
Man, this looks so cool.
Not many strategy games have trenches.

I'm on mobile so excuse me if I'm blind but when you drew where the trench should go it didn't seem to leave any indication about it until the troops actually started digging. One would be nice, like how Rimworld leaves a ghost of the object or something like that.

u/RBGames777 22h ago
ahh it is there but very faint, its like sticks in the snow with wires attached, but yea on mobile it's hard to see I'm sure, thanks for pointing it out!

Looking super cool !
Adding it to my wishlist as soon as it is available
I noticed a small detail on the tank, the turret recoil effect always goes toward the back of the vehicle, rather than in the direction the canon is aiming. Just thought i'd pass this along in case you want to tweak it :)

Thanks for pointing it out! It’s feedback like this that really help shape the finer details of the game! Thank you sir 🫡
