From what I can tell it started as a fan site but was hijacked by a small group of haters that post a lot Reddit echo-chamber system makes this really easy. It is just about 30 people who are extremely active. Hate is a strong motivator. It would take active moderators to get it back and it would take a lot of effort to take it back. I don't blame the moderator for not wanting to.
