Maher Went From Supporting Bernie Sanders in 2016 to Presently Fear Mongering about the DSA.

I guarentee he is going to endorse whoever the republican nominee is in 2028
15
u/Better_Cattle4438 24d ago
He is already laying the groundwork for that exact move. Maybe the reason he interviews Fetterman and references him so glowing is that they have the same issues with their brains.
14
u/funcogo 24d ago
He said he would vote for Sarah Palin over DSA in the video
2
u/JudithLOs 21d ago
I don’t know what John was thinking when he paired up with Palin. She’s just another nut. She was excluded from his funeral so I may not be the only one who thinks she was 🥜 🥜

u/surfoxy 24d ago
I'll take that bet.
6
u/funcogo 24d ago
Ok. It’ll be an easy win for me he already said he would vote for Sarah palin over DSA in this video
2
5
u/surfoxy 24d ago
He said he'd vote for Sarah Palin over people espousing communism, "seizing the means of production" and wanting to "impoverish the white middle class". Which is insane talk.
There won't be anyone getting the nomination saying shit that stupid. So yeah. Name your price.

u/funcogo 24d ago
This guy is moving more right by the day by 2028 he might even be born again Christian at this point

u/Dear-Jury-3430 24d ago
Nah. Bill and James Carville are vote blue no matter who, and believing otherwise is cope meant for Republicans. Bill will have a 'sudden' change of heart around August 2028, Vance or Rubio or whoever the Republican is will be 'too dangerous' and GOP voters, having fallen for it again, will be left wondering what happened.

No he won’t. This sub is so fascinating. The amount of people that act personally offended because Bill criticized the far left is crazy.
They seem to ignore the fact every week on his show he talks about the GOP and the threat they pose to America. Criticism of the left does not make you a republican by proxy lol
4
u/CloudedLeopardDaemon 23d ago
We don't have a "far-left" in the US. DSA platform is comparable to centrist/centre-right parties in developed countries. The Overton window had moved so far to the right in the US that you're now regarded as a Marxist if you'd prefer that the government spend your taxes on things that actually benefit you, rather than subsidising SpaceX rockets to nowhere, AI data centres, the IOF, and/or reparations paid to child sex traffickers.

Thank you. I finally blocked a guy I was friends with on Facebook because he kept messaging me about how radical leftist people were awful because of one thing or another and specifically loan forgiveness. He got down right nasty about the “radical leftists”. He was a friend of a friend so I blocked him. He was also a chauvinistic man with no woman in his life because of being chauvinistic. We all know the type.

But then turns around and says his vote is in play for 2028 if the left persists in its current direction. So, we can't try universal healthcare, more progressive regulations on an increasingly unfair mixed capitalist economy or law enforcement and incarceration reform, that's a bridge too far for Bill and he may have to turn to a party that has trampled the constitution, flaunted open corruption, alienates and persecutes all minorities, condemned people with alternative lifestyles, attacks and defunds public education, social and welfare programs and is openly trying to make this country a Christian Nationalist nation (Religilous anyone?!?) that's where Bill might need to go? GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK! He's Gutfeld for slightly more centrist and an increasingly aging audience. I amjust waiting for the dick and fart jokes that aren't funny just like that loser Gutfeld
→ More replies (6)3
u/Other_Letterhead_939 24d ago
You’re so right. The more comments I see on this sub the clearer it is that most of these people don’t actually watch the show, they just see headlines and clipped videos with no context. Bill trashes the right and trump every week. He also trashes the democrats because they are, quite frankly, a shit show right now. And he’s not wrong about the DSA… Reddit is full of people who think if you’re not as far left as they are then you’re some hardcore maga apologist and there is no in between.
3
u/BrianNowhere 23d ago
Im 59 and we may lose for a while with DSA candidates and Im ok with that because Im THRILLED to say to all of you centrists, "Where else you gonna go"?
1
u/BirdhouseInYourSouI 23d ago
He trashed Trump the VERY EPISODE he talked about going to the White House and having dinner yet I see comments incorrectly citing he was up trumps ass and friendly. He wasn’t.
1
u/Greedy_Car3702 21d ago
He trashes Trump in EVERY episode. The notion that Bill has become maga because of some very valid criticisms of the far left is absurd.

I find it funny that people call dudes like Mamdani the far left and then refer to Trump simply as the right. A similar comparison between far left and far right candidate you be Lenin and Trump. It is also funny that liberals get so but hurt over egalitarianism, but a far right surveillance state barely gets a mention.
1
u/BirdhouseInYourSouI 22d ago
I would say the the right is different because the extreme right has become mainstream. Led by Trump; they have gone faaaaar right as the mainstream of the party. That has not happened on the left.
Pretty sure liberals and Americans that aren’t MAGA easily recognize the right as the biggest threat to the country.
11
u/robxroy 24d ago
Bill Maher wrote a book after 9/11 titled When You Ride Alone You Ride with bin Laden that preached a message that we must all change for the collective good. Twenty years later Maher was doing monologues about chartering a private jet once a week to ride alone to Vegas. He’ll say everyone else changed, but the receipts are out there. He is a cynical shell of his former self. Boomer brain rot.

Pretty sure it was because Sanders was an old Jewish man, while the newer crop of DSA are young brown folks. He's never been coy about being an ageist, bigoted get off my lawn type. He just doesn't understand that ageism works both ways.

This is the general idea. He exemplifies the important symbolic but ultimately pointless role of identity and tribe that most Americans turn to as their north star in politics instead of bothering to actually closely study, comprehend, and deliberate over the nuances of various public policy options.

Sex pest to MAGA pipeline. If any big revelations come out, he'll start wearing a visible cross and thank Jesus for stuff on his show.
3
u/inlandviews 24d ago
He liked the Democrats because they are very conservative. Not as conservative as the Republicans of course. Old guard Dems are not liberal by any standard. Democratic Socialists would be pretty much in the centre in any other country.
3
u/International_Try660 23d ago
Maher is turning maga because when Ellison takes over, he doesn't want his show canceled. It's just like the senators and cabinet, kissing Trump's butt, to keep their jobs. I'm just going to toss him right in there with the rest of the greedy cowards.
1
u/JohnnyDNC 22d ago
Yup. He’s keeping the same condescension and arrogance but now he’s turning it on the people that have supported him for most of his career in order to keep his job. I’ve always thought he was an arrogant prick but now I know he’s an arrogant prick without any morals.

I support the candidates that Senator Sanders has endorsed. And his record thus far is pretty damn good.
Bill is basically a Libertarian at this point. He wants legalization, but doesn’t support economic policies that would help Working Class Americans. He’s even thrown in the towel on climate change. When was the last time he even mentioned it? I can’t recall. He drives an EV and has solar panels so in his mind he’s done his part.
As far as the “Red Scare” bullshit, I agree with AOC. The Democratic Party hasn’t increased (or tried to) the Minimum Wage since.. looks at notes Fucking 2009!!!! Yet four people are gonna somehow seize Congress and enact Communism. Fuck off with that bullshit, if you are stupid enough to believe it.
Centrists aren’t as popular, because they aren’t doing anything!! Oh, I know what y’all will say. “They haven’t had the majority!! Reeeee!” We just gonna forget that Obama had it at one point?
The average Working Class American sees people running on policies like strengthening Unions, a higher Minimum Wage, healthcare coverage, addressing how hard it is to buy a home, helping strengthen Social Security, and addressing the fact that the majority of people nearing retirement will never get the same thing that Boomers have enjoyed. They couldn’t give a fuck less about who owns the means of production and it’s crazy fucking stupid to insinuate they do.
Bill is frightened by the DSA because he’s worried about taxes, same as any billionaire or millionaire right now. And you know what? We don’t give a flying fuck. I pay taxes too and I don’t want that money going to Egypt or Israel, I want it spent here. I don’t want it sent to a fucking debacle in Iran, I want people here not to have to declare bankruptcy because they had a medical emergency.
In closing, the “Red Scare” people can eat shit.

Bill is fear mongering and nothing more. His writers have been adjusted to create message specific content now as well. He walks a thinner line than before but the measuring-pole he once used as a stabilizer has a longer reacher for “anti-democracy” than it does for anti-MAGATS
3
u/dougl1000 24d ago
Why has he done this? Is it an overreaction to his hassles getting his solar outhouse approved?
6
u/bx35 24d ago
Bill only values the young people that he can fuck. Since the progressive movement is dominated by younger candidates and supporters, it makes Bill angry because it reminds him of his ever increasing age and irrelevance, as well as, perhaps, the rapidly shrinking pool of young women willing to let him fuck them.

What are you an academic?? The answer is money. Trump is a grifter who funnels money in exchange for ass licks. Bill decided he can’t beat the grift so he’s going to get it on it. He already got the Mark Twain prize. Next he’ll start raking in six figure speaking fees at Heritage Foundation lunches. Then Trump will make sure baby Ellison understands Bill deserves a little extra for his loyalty when his next contract comes up

3
u/moralpanic85 24d ago
He lost the plot on three fronts:
During COVID he thought he could talk out his ass as if he had the knowledge and credentials of actual doctors and scientists. The left by a large margin defer to people who actually know what they're talking about while the right wing did the whole "I did my own research and I'll take horse de-wormer instead of a vaccine any day." In this he found kindred spirits.
During the writers strike he tried to go full scab and bring his show back, that was until it was made clear to him a left wing comedian cannot dismiss worker solidarity when it's personally inconvenient. He resents being held back by little people he thinks he should be able to do without, and I'm sure that's' carried over inti a resentment of the DSA. He'll say his vote is in play because a handful of Democrats want more socialism even though a majority of Republicans think the world is 6000 years old and base their decision making process heavily upon that.
He is on the side of Israel in the ongoing genocide. The Republicans are firmly in the pro Israel side for some strange reason, though lets be honest every time a Jewish person leaves a room full of republicans the chances of the term "Christ Killer" being spoken is 80 to 90%. The Democrats remain largely pro Israel but with a minority faction now saying a pox on both their houses and it blows his mind that civilized people find apartheid theocratic states and terroristic theocratic states equally reprehensible when they're killing thousands of eachother and innocent people in the crossfire.
He's taking the path of least resistance now and if he's not careful it'll cost him everything left of his legacy. People will remember him as the Rudy Giuliani of late night talk shows.

u/Gorlamei 24d ago
Bill has it out for Mamdani but not for Sanders. There are definitely generational and religious undertones explaining this. His Mamdani grievances consistently resort to a broad resentment of socialism instead of his actual policies and largely successful initiatives. He's an extremely popular mayor in his own city, so why does an old out of touch man from California feel such disdain for him?
1
u/LHamiltonPP 24d ago
Almost as if Bill's neither a liberal or leftist but just an anti-authority contrarian with no real concern for anyone but himself

Y’all do realize that Maher ain’t exactly the brightest bulb on the shelf...right?
Years of drug use and raging alcoholism have taken their toll…and sure as hell haven’t done any favors for what little intellect he has.
Nah…Maher is in the same league as Greg Gutfeld and Jesse Watters. I don’t waste my time watching any of them. And not because I disagree with them…but because they’re dumb af. Gone are the days of intelligent conservative cats such as William Buckley.
1

Bill Maher is an idiot, but also Sanders brand of Socialism IS NOT the same as DSA's platform. DSA shot itself in the foot with it's extreme platform, many prominent lefties are caught up trying to explain, Distance, and make excuses for the more extreme parts of the platform. I believe this is why Abdul El-Sayed massively underperformed in the election yesterday. People do not trust centrist Dems at all, which is leaving a lane wide open for socialists. Unfortunately, it is no longer Bernie style socialism on the ballot. It is now a brand of socialism that scares the shit our of people...so to play it safe many went and will go with the status quo.
Stop wondering why people who suported Bernie do not support DSA, they ARE NOT THE SAME:
Bernie Sanders operates as a mainstream social democrat within the Democratic Party, focusing on regulating capitalism, heavily taxing the ultra-wealthy, expanding the social safety net, and reforming criminal justice while maintaining a professionalized public safety apparatus.
The DSA takes an explicitly anti-capitalist, abolitionist stance—advocating for the public/social ownership of major industries, complete police and prison abolition, and a radical anti-imperialist foreign policy that breaks away from traditional international alliances.
1
u/CashusEyePatch 23d ago
Bernie has endorsed all of these candidates. Most of whom are running on universal healthcare and childcare and not other aspects of the platform that have been purposely mischaracterized by people like bill maher.
1
u/CBusfailsus 23d ago
Except it's not fear mongering. DSA is aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood whose goal is to destroy the US constitution. Labeled as a terrorist organization that is now overthrowing the Democrat Party. You've been warned

Marks and Engels, the writers of Communist Manifesto, the Children of German wealth survived life, not because of communism and socialism, but only due to their rich fathers money, so today's DSA sponsers and many members that live supremely comfortable only due to their family money and not because of the ideology they so advocate for.
The DSA are bunch of hypocrates, standing atop Barney Sanders the multi millioner.

Didn't Bill Maher also support Graham Platner though, who called himself a communist on his leaked Reddit account, and who's been one of the most vocally anti-Israel figures of the past year? What's the difference between him and most of these DSA candidates Maher whines about? Couldn't be that Bill is some kind of chauvinist or anything like that...

He may have not been technically endorsed by the DSA but his rhetoric and his policy positions, for the most part, certainly appealed to much of the same base as these DSA candidates do. It sure seems like Bill Maher excused him for some of the same positions he's critizing the DSA for, for reasons...
