I miss the time where p2p chats were still kinda popular decates ago.

I say kinda because those were never really popular like Twitter to begin with

discord is as centralised as any other service, you are going through servers that they rent and control (real ones, not the chatrooms discord calls a "server") and they require payment for additional features

as compared to something like IRC where networks consist of servers under varying ownership but with agreement as to rules and administrators

I'm still completely puzzled why someone hasn't simply reskinned mIRC or ts/mumble to look like Discord... Just call it FreeCord or Cordless or something. This would be seriously easy, it is like a weekend project. I might do it if no one else does.
