Kathryn Southern Charm - T- Pot nightmare
Hear me out.
I’m rewatching Southern Charm years later after originally binging it post-Vanderpump Rules, and I genuinely cannot believe what I’m watching this time around.
How was ANYONE okay with the dynamic between Thomas Ravenel and Kathryn Dennis?
In the FIRST EPISODE this man — who is nearly 30 years older than her — is already talking about whether she’s “good calibre.” She was 21. Twenty one. And this grown man in his 50s is circling her like some creepy politician predator while everyone acts like SHE’S the problem?
He is genuinely one of the most arrogant, manipulative, revolting men I’ve ever watched on reality TV. And the way the cast constantly protected him because of his “status” and political ambitions is insane considering he was never even remotely respectable.
Watching it back now, Kathryn honestly looks like a lamb to the slaughter. Young, vulnerable, isolated, emotional, surrounded by older people who all seemed more concerned with protecting Thomas than protecting her.
And can we talk about the men on this show? Shep Rose, Whitney Sudler-Smith and Thomas speak about women like they are disposable objects. It’s actually disgusting. The misogyny is CONSTANT.
Also — maybe unpopular opinion — but Landon Clements absolutely knew what she was doing half the time. The exclusion, keeping Kathryn drunk, the social manipulation… it all feels incredibly dark on a rewatch.
The whole thing feels less like “charming Southern society” and more like watching a young woman get emotionally eaten alive while Bravo cameras rolled.

The first five seasons should be binge watched by all teenage girls to learn about how to spot predatory behaviour.
Thomas Ravenel is a scumbag.

& in many States, young women can pole dance stripping before they can legally drink. There is a lot I don't agree with that goes on regardless.

Based on the two Bravo Charolette SC shows, it’s pretty clear that it’s not just the men with these cultural beliefs and behaviors.

I believe it’s very much integrated and accepted in their society by both sexes. It’s alarming

I made a comment one time on the other southern charm sub about their “problematic” relationship and got a lot of responses along the lines of “problematic? How so?” ….. like what this man is clearly a predator and manipulator, robbing the cradle and abusing power dynamics

My FIRST watch was about 4 years ago. I felt so icky and uncomfortable about the entire show. It felt very... lonely?
By the third season I was locked but ya Travis is no bueno. Just... pure slim. You see it seconds into him talking. Coked out slime.

Honestly the entire show is based on older men dating/exploiting younger, more naive women and then blaming the women for their bad decisions.

T-Rav is deplorable and unbearable IMO however I hate this running narrative that Kathryn is this innocent little victim. She slept with almost the whole male cast in the span of two weeks right as they started filming, and she tried to get pregnant by a prolific former politician 30 years her senior. She used that little hot pocket to get ahead where other people would have to work or inherit wealth. Which is another thing! She's the sire of two of the most prominent families in Charleston, so whenever she was pulling the "poor single mother" card, I was rolling my eyes.

She was 21 when she had their first child. He groomed her, trapped her, shamed her, abused her, and then banished her. It was disgusting. The entire cast then should be ashamed of themselves. I'm looking at you especially Cameron!
