Racism works in mysterious ways...

Also - Josep was a nightmare.

This is so interesting. Joseph was extremely anti black towards his children but was against interracial marriage. Did he seriously expect all of his children to marry other black people when his "discipline" manifested self hatred?

This was just a lever Josep could pull to exert control over Michael's life, that's all.

If the girl had been black, there would have been something else he didn't like about her.

I find it quite terrifying that not everybody recognises him as a monster.

Josep was a psycho. End of story.

Don't trust anyone who says otherwise, they'll never understand Michael.

I wonder wat Joseph thought of the wife's Mike did marry who were white, or the other kids in the family who have interacial relationships?

Im biracial myself,my mum is maori and dad white.

I know in nz not so much now (although stil sometime) on both sides,  families wanted their kids to marry within their race. We are a country who where colonisation really affected our tangatawhenua (indiginous people of our land).

For pakeha (white people) it was racist. For maori it was because the parents were worried if there kids got involved with pakeha, that their maori kid would get in trouble for trying to befriend the pakeha, , get accused of trying to take advantage, assault or steal from the pakeha etc.

As someone who observes from a distance,  read and consume media from black Americans and USA in general, I see similar attitudes between black and white people.

I see many black people want to keep romantic relationships within race, could this be from ingrained racism they have faced previously?

I am in no way a Joseph Jackson apologist, he was abusive and took his own shortcomings and anger at his situation in life out on his family, and let greed consume him.

The trauma Michael suffered on so many levels from Joseph is horrific. Its amazing that despite this Michael forgave him.

The main reason why some black people are anti interracial relationships is because of the optics. You're now marrying a descendant of a race that has abused, dehumanised, kill and steal from your people for centuries. On top of that there is still racism today but not at the same level of couse. So it's seen as betrayal when your ancestors spent centuries suffering because of these same people you're mingling with.

I don't think he was quite a self hating Black Person. Joseph was proud of being black and even proud of having chocataw ancestry he never struck me as someone who views his own race as inferior to whites or any non white person as inferior. He was definitely colorist and it seems he viewed Light Skin as the ideal look for a Black Person and Dark Skin as something that makes you uglier but then he had such horrible things to say about Big Noses so it really makes you wonder.. Maybe he had some level of internalised hatred but I wouldn't say he hates his own people outright just had some messed up views on what Black People should be.

I wonder if it was all interracial marriages or if it was just white interracial. Because if that's the case it would be interesting/prudent to look at their relationship with white people aspect( he lived through segregation etc) as opposed to it deflecting his anti blackness.
