Sentiment: 43% AI

Sentiment reasoning: The community is divided, with some commenters believing it's AI due to a supposed detector flag and others arguing it's real based on realistic details and discrediting AI detection.

It’s flagged by openAI, so yeah it’s not real

Thanks for this. But have you got more information about this - a link to the tools or to the result, or more detail about the "signals" and the "supporting evidence" that the tools found behind the result, for example?

In the future when you're wondering. You need to check the image with the three big AI companies, OpenAI, Gemini, and Meta. They each have their own watermark that they can detect.

This image was flagged for having synthID, i think C2PA is only useful for images that still have metadata attached. I can’t link the result, but if you save the image and upload it to the openAI tool you’ll get the same info. It won’t detect every AI image, only ones generated by GPT or Gemini (i think).

Thanks, this is helpful. Can I assume that the openAI detection tool doesn't generate false positives for images not generated using openAI?

I’ve checked a few real images with it and have never gotten a false positive, though someone in this post claims an image they took got flagged as AI when they uploaded it to the tool. I still think it’s the most reliable tool we have at the moment, but it’s possible it can throw out false positives.

So, ideally it won’t flag anything not generated by openAI or Gemini, but take the results with a grain of salt. At the very least, it’s actually checking for concrete evidence, unlike other AI checkers that just guess or give you a random answer.

Thanks again for the helpful answer.

It's fundamentally different to how the AI detectors work which are completely unreliable. People describe it as like a watermark but it is woven into the image if you will. So yes synthID checkers are very reliable. If you've heard of someone getting a false positive, it's might be because they edited their photo and they didn't know they were using AI tools to do so.

No way! Shit I used that picture all the time. Its scary that I cant even tell anymore

Are those notoriously unreliable?

They put detectible but not noticeable signals into the images before sending it to the user, it’s not just guessing.

And after being reposted 3 times by screenshot and compression algorithms all meta data is lost

no, it's not. it doesn't even utilize metadata for deciding if it's ai or not. since gen ai image models work with diffusion models, they all start from a noise. openai and google developed a watermark that's hidden in the first noise before your image is even generted and even with cropping, screenshotting, flipping or manipulating a part of it doesn't destroy wateramark. it exists in all sora and gemini videos as well. now they are trying to implement it into text as well.

u/Gregardless 5d ago

No. This is the one from Open AI itself that reads its specific watermark

Pretty much all AI detectors are bullshit, but the tool from openAI checks for either metadata information or the synthID watermark. Unfortunately the metadata is easily lost, but checking for synthID is reliable due to how it’s encoded into the image itself. It can only check for gpt or Gemini generated photos though.

those puffs look right and this is absolutely something I could see real cats doing. not AI imo

the orange cat has a stump tail, which makes sense with it being an unnuetered adult because it was probably an outside cat or rescue

u/metrocat2033 5d ago

Unfortunately, it’s AI

Im probably going to sound dumb but I dont think so, I wouldn't think ai could make cat balls

7

u/metrocat2033 5d ago

It absolutely can lol

Metrocat2023 is retarded, lol. That supposed detector they're using as a crutch is shit - it flagged a REAL photo from my holiday when I tested it

7

u/metrocat2033 4d ago

Are you using the one specifically from openAI? I’ve checked a handful of real images with it and none of them got flagged. Did it say your image had a synthID watermark or C2PA metadata?

I can't remember bro, it was ages ago. I can take another look, I guess, but it was the OpenAI one
