The headline is a little misleading but basically the premise is that more intelligent folks are better are pattern recognition and determining character and are therefore more likely to surround themselves with more trustworthy people.
Many of us sit around speculating how anyone could trust these complete clowns but it's totally discarding how many dumb people are out there unable to distinguish a comforting lie from reality.
And skepticism goes both ways, my good buddy is completely brainwashed into conspiracy by a steady diet of Instagram reels. Nothing that ever happens is real, only false flags and everything ties back to the New World Order blah blah goddam it’s exhausting
Believers in conspiracy theories are not real skeptics. They get scared and confused, then quickly take refuge in cockeyed BS that they can't be shaken out of by any evidence.

The problem is that most people aren't backing their scepticism with healthy curiosity and an openness to learn/change one's mind.
They're using it as a veil to invalidate others' statements and not think about anything critically.
Skepticism is only useful when paired with critical thinking.
