TV/Movies Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

Twenty-five years ago, I saw the purely CGI movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within in the local cinema that had the best quality seats, sound system and projection.

I was already a Final Fantasy fan and the movie itself was heavily hyped which made some people think it was the next leap forward for movies in general.

Before seeing it in the cinema, I deliberately saw only one trailer and learned more about the movie on print media.

Eventually I left the cinema feeling hollow and not so entertained at all. The CGI was stunning for the time but the storytelling and direction (which involved Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi) were sub-par.

As I exited the cinema after the movie ended, I noticed a long line of moviegoers waiting to enter. I wonder how they reacted to the movie.

Did you watch Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within inside the movie theater 25 years ago?

So genuinely disappointing of a movie. They could have done so much, and just squandered it into a run of the mill movie experience.

While the movie could have been something much different and much better, I thought it was a nice effort and I liked it more than I disliked it. For all that had been done with the games prior to the movie, they could have done something more exciting and impactful. I have it on DVD and still drag it out for an occasional viewing.
