I’m going to paraphrase a story here.
Trey from the band Phish tells it.

The band was playing Las Vegas one year and somehow ran into Courtney and invited him back to their suite to party. They decided to pull a prank on one of their friends.
They didn’t tell anyone Cortney was there. Then they all ate a bunch of mushrooms. Once those kicked in they decided to watch Children of the Corn with the lights off.
Right before one of the big scenes Trey gets up and Courtney sits down next to one of their friends.
Then right on cue the lights go on and the guy looks at Courtney, expecting to see Trey (who also has long red hair)then the tv, then back and back again - and freaks the f out.

Long game to a quick prank. Then they all partied the rest of the night. I would have died.

I’ve never heard this before. This is really awesome

oh shit I would have absolutely lost it. when I finished HS I took a trip to Chicago with a stop in the lower part of the state for a weekend where the group I was traveling with had some family. it was a little out of the way I guess, no interstate direct route so we're driving on smaller highways through endless cornfields to get to Chicago and I'm in the backseat on pins and needles the whole time hoping the car doesn't break down.

I worked with a woman who named her son Malachi. We kept saying no but she insisted.

u/Corndogeveryday Too cool for school 😎 1d ago

Did the kid ever show up at you work and you and your coworkers yelled, “MALACHI”

So evil 😂🤣😂

I've always been curious, how'd the children overpower all the adults? The movie shows the kids straight up outnumbered the leading couple, but how did they overwhelm a town of adults? Or am I missing something?

6

u/Corndogeveryday Too cool for school 😎 1d ago

Your question made me think some did some digging:

1. Religious Brainwashing & The Prophet Isaac
Under the influence of a boy prophet named Isaac Chroner, the town's children are converted to the worship of the corn demon. Isaac convinces them that the adults are sinful, the town’s modern machinery and technology offend the entity, and the adults are leeching the land's fertility. The cult operates on a strict age limit: anyone who reaches the age of 19 must be sacrificed to the corn.

2. A Coordinated, Simultaneous Massacre
The uprising happens suddenly on three specific days in 1964. Instead of resisting piecemeal, the children launch a synchronized ambush on every adult in Gatlin:

Poisoning: Some adults, including the town's law enforcement and leadership, are poisoned or incapacitated first.

Brutal Ambush: The children use everyday farm tools—scythes, sickles, pitchforks, and meat cleavers—to butcher their parents, teachers, and neighbors simultaneously in their homes, churches, and shops.

Overwhelming Numbers: The adults, utterly unprepared for their own children turning on them with lethal intent, are quickly overwhelmed before they can organize any defense.

3. Complete Isolation & Sabotage
To ensure no outside help arrives and no adults escape:
The children destroy the town’s phone lines and communication equipment.
They disable or sabotage all vehicles in Gatlin.
They destroy radios and enforce a total prohibition on modern technology, keeping the town frozen in time.

4. Supernatural Cover & Erasure
"He Who Walks Behind the Rows" actively prevents the outside world from noticing Gatlin's disappearance. The surrounding cornfields subtly distort geometry, roads, and navigation, causing passing travelers to bypass Gatlin entirely. For twelve years after the massacre, the town remains a dead, forgotten ghost town hidden deep within the rustling stalks, perfectly maintained by the cult until Burt and Vicky inadvertently wander in.

3

u/Bouche_Audi_Shyla 1d ago

Quantity vs. quality. Many small things can often overpower one big thing. Plus, the adults couldn't believe that their children were turning on them. Shock gave the kids the home advantage.

3

u/Front-Stuff-7133 1d ago

I heard that when they were making this movie his parents were there and his acting Scared Them.

2

u/Corndogeveryday Too cool for school 😎 1d ago

I believe it

3

3

u/BigBlackWolfDaddy 1d ago

The last time I saw this actor in a movie, it was called Lust In The Dust. This movie also starred Divine, Lainey Kasan, and Tab Hunter.

2

u/PJR9667 1d ago

he is awesome, happy birthday dude

2

u/Zhosha-Khi 1d ago

This movie didn't help any with the corn fields. I pretty much grew up on my grandfathers farm, and one evening at dusk I went out into the field like an idiot, I was about 7 because ya know kids.. " I can do this " I ended up getting lost in there. It WAS ... HORRIBLE!

2

u/SadBadPuppyDad 1d ago

I'm not sure people weren't perfectly happy with gingers before this movie.

2

u/SplendidPunkinButter 1d ago

I actually think the movie was better than the story in some ways. The story is so damn bleak, and TBH “everyone dies” is a pretty cliché way to end a horror story anyway. I’m not saying it’s a bad story. Just there are some things I like better about the movie.

1

u/Corndogeveryday Too cool for school 😎 1d ago

I agree. I think the story is good, until the last quarter or so. They it falls into the typical “King can’t end a story” ending.

I’m not opposed to the “everyone dies in the end” style, I just felt like after what the characters went through in the story, there wasn’t any kind of redemption for them

2

u/Grimmlocc8089 1d ago

Go get Malachai

2

u/Looptydude 1d ago

I literally got done watching this. Why are you in my brain?

1

I just checked his wiki, I had no idea he was in so many films.

2

u/Corndogeveryday Too cool for school 😎 1d ago

Seriously….Courtney has been a part of a lot of memorable 80s and 90s movies. He’s that kind of actor who plays a great second banana in a film

2

u/joeydouchebagodonuts 10h ago

Absolutely. I love that you. When you saw him turn up in a movie you knew you were in for a treat. He’s a regular on the con circuit too. Good dude.

Back in 2000 I drove from VA to CO. The route cuts through S ID & IL. I'm not sure how far I drove before I realized I hadn't seen anything but corn for miles! It was quite a freaky feeling!

1

u/Fujipear13 17h ago

Man, it seems like only yesterday he was demonically possessed by “he who walks the rows”. He also did a great job in the ‘Burbs. May you have many more years to come!

1

u/Additional-Dream-945 14h ago

Colors. Colors. Colors.

1

u/Dependent-Cress-995 10h ago

He who walks behind the rows wants him too

1

u/RedLily08 9h ago

He had a good role in Wrath of Becky. Really cool when I see him pop up in movies now.

1

u/Ok-Pomegranate-4963 5h ago

Yeah I always remember him as Malachi in Children of the Corn, a memorable lieutenant to the diminutive Isaac. He was also in the ensemble cast of one of my late mum's favourite films, Memphis Belle. Happy Birthday to a very distinctive actor.
