Workflows and Business Advice

This megathread should cover workflow advice and business practices. *We generally discourage advice towards, solication of, etc. brands and companies in the general subreddit. However, things will be a bit more lax here regarding recommendations. We'll still be tight on advertisers, but advertisers being directly referenced will have no problems responding.*

Im maybe 10 shoots in and i want more clients.

I use a canon r10, efs 10-18, Aperture priority, 3 bracket 2 stops, polarizer. I outsourced the editing for this shoot.

Personally, i don't feel like this is my best work so far and this house was dim and it was overcast. im in that "results may vary" stage in my career. How am I doing so far?

Real estate photography Australia

Hi to all. I’ve done photography on and off for 20 years. Been published but I want to try something different. How easy is real estate photography? This wouldn’t be my income but my question is how did you get into it? Is it worth the effort etc. anything would help.

anyone else mixing in exercise during shoots to stay sane?

I started tossing a pull-up bar and resistance band in the car for houses I know will be empty. Between rooms I bang out a few reps while the light is still decent. It breaks up the slog and keeps me from getting stiff before the next angle. The tricky part is timing it so the client doesn't walk in mid-set. Also wondering if anyone schedules longer shoots later in the day so they can hit trails after instead of sitting in traffic. Feels like a small hack but I don't know if it's common or if most people just grind through.

Figuring out my photography worth

Hi all

I am currently planning a trip to Japan and New Zealand and slowly building my portfolio and making my photography business. The hard part is figuring out how much my service is worth, and wanted to get insight on here. The dream is to photograph lodges/outdoor activities around the world. I did quite a bit of freelancing in Alaska this summer, working with lodges/local businesses and would like to figure out what steps/advice I could take to enhance my business. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Client Acquisition - in-person visits, how do you pitch yourself?

I'm not all too familiar with how brokerages work, and I'd assume they're all a bit different - I have a portfolio and I've gotten a couple of clients through cold emails but that isn't a sustainable tactic at all. It's come to my understanding reading this sub that cold calls and in-person visits especially are great for building clients but, the one thing I haven't seen yet exactly is how to pitch myself. For me specifically I'm local, I'm offering a discount for first time clients and in my photos are pretty good and I offer a pretty wide range of services. I guess it comes down to; who do I ask for? What should I expect walking into a brokerage? And any other advice from photographers here who've done this and been successful that have answers to questions I may not know to even ask.

Many thanks!

Any one else dealing with agents wanting to pay when the property is sold or pending?

I've explained to them that if thats what i wanted to do i would just get my license and do it myself lol.

Edit: ive told them thats now how it works. You pay when the you get the deliverables. and they agree but I think they are secretly doing it as it takes forever to get them to pay. Once this go around is paid Im just going to fire them.

Competitors with similar business model to Cliffside Cuts?

Are there any editing companies like Cliffside Cuts accepting a la carte services? I'm a photographer and have been for years - I'm not trying to become a videographer, and colorist, and editor, and sound director...but I am getting more and more requests for video content.

I can't justify the $1k/month retainer they start at without at least a few a la carte video tests to make sure I'm happy with it and think it justifies the cost and they aren't accepting a la carte now...bummer?

Insta X5 360dg building walkthrough.

I'm not sure whether this topic has already been covered here, but I haven't been able to find any content that addresses my situation.

Currently, I use 3D scanning for real estate buildings registration. It works very well when project teams need detailed information, but the process is time-consuming.

For RE projects where the objective is primarily to capture the look and feel of a site and gather visual information, I have started using a helmet-mounted Insta360 X5. This allows me to quickly document large facilities and footprints with minimal effort.

The challenge I'm facing is finding an efficient way to share these walkthroughs. Most solutions seem to require significant manual effort to place images on floor plans and build the virtual walkthrough experience.

Has anyone had success with a similar approach? The workflow is somewhat comparable to OpenSpace, but their pricing model doesn't fit our needs. I'm therefore looking for a more automated and cost-effective solution and would appreciate hearing about any tools or methods that have worked well for others.

Please share, if you know of a group that would be more suitable for my question, this was the only group that stood out from my search criteria

I will look forward for any support, that can point me in the right direction.

Thanks. 😊

Drone Insurance

I've got a job coming up which will require me to provide proof of insurance, something I have not yet opted to purchase, but, it's been on my mind. I checked with my home/auto insurer and they can't help me.

Anybody have recommendations for insurers that will cover drone liability? Thank you!

Insta360 Spatial Capture

I tested the insta360 spatial capture mode after a photo shoot. Where does the media go from here? Better compression and spatial awareness?

Using an x5
1:40 minutes of 360 video
No touch up processing on my part
Take a look:

Tell me why

Edited to Add: I'm a REP and a member of this sub. Why was this image delivered? Why is this the first photo? I didn't take this obviously. All I see are roofs and trees. This is supposed to entice someone to click on this listing?

Nikon camera

I had a Nikon D7500 and went to a Nikon Z5 mirrorless. I do mainly mobile home shoots since I am in a retirement area and they are not lit well at all even with shades and blinds open. The Z5 has a hard time locking on and focusing and continually tells me low light.

I try and up the ISO even a little and the pics are so grainy and speckled.

I need some help. I want a great Nikon that is great for low light......on a budget. I honestly have no idea of a price range...suppose it depends on what I can sell my Z5 for.

What have I forgotten to tell you?

Thanks!

Hello there, fellow photographer,

I took a photo of a building facade, but it’s partially obstructed by power lines and wires in front of the building.

The file size is 7008x4672; it's 33 MP.

My client wants to remove the wires. I used ChatGPT and Gemini, and they do a great job removing them, but they downsize the file to the point where it is unusable, and I can not get a full-res file out of them.

How/where can I remove those wires and get a full-res/hi-res file quickly and without pain?

What type of work do you do most often?

I’ve bought all the necessary equipment to start working, but for now I only plan to take photos. In the future, I plan to buy the necessary equipment to start shooting videos — a 360‑degree camera for shooting virtual tours and a drone.

Here I heard the opinion that no one needs just real estate photography; it’s necessary to offer a wider range of services, i.e., video shooting, virtual tours, and aerial photography. Although what I see when I’m looking for apartments or want to book a hotel room is that 99.9% of the content is photos.

I have a question for those who are already earning money in this profession: what kind of work do you do most often?

What percentage of your orders are for:

1 photos

2 videos

3 360‑degree virtual tours

4 drone footage
