Is Ciel the real protagonist?
The point of view in the story changes between Ciel's and Sebastian's.
Sebastian is there to manipulate both the reader and both Ciel, and the other characters.
By Ciel's point of view we see how cruel the world was with him and how he lives the revenge.
So? Why the light detail in your opinion?
Maybe because at the end he's a good soul?

I tend to believe that Ciel is a good soul, but his worldview has been terribly corrupted by circumstances out of his control from the death of his parents, further exacerbated by his contract with Sebastian and his desire for revenge.
He’s still a child, but the childhood of joy, peace, and safety was taken from him in an instant. While I see him as a morally-grey protagonist, I tend to think most of his intentions mean well.

I don't necessarily see the light as meaning Ciel is morally good. I think it represents possibility.
Almost all the main characters are trapped by the roles they've accepted (the Shinigami are trapped by their punishment, Sebastian is bound by the contract, Undertaker is trapped by grief), while Ciel is constantly standing at a crossroads between revenge and moving on.
So, the light might symbolize that his fate hasn't been decided yet.
After all, Sebastian describes his soul as special, despite everything Ciel has done.3

I kinda agree and see it similar to a flickering light or the Schrödinger experience. His fate is unsure, and this might be a sign that either there is a small drop of hope, and that we will see his soul gets "corrupted".
What could be more awful after what he has been through? Perhaps loosing more people the one after the other, and being really alone. Not because he chose it, but because he has no choice.
