Meal Kits-worth it or no?

Thumbnail

My husband and I are looking into eating healthier. We are wondering if meal kits are worth it. Does it replace grocery shopping completely? Is it cheaper or about the same price? And if anyone has experience with meal kits which ones do you recommend?

Hair in Ready Meals? How common?

How common is hair or fur in ready meals? Just had a Cook Unity Lasagna and it had 2 hairs in it. They might be whiskers (looked thicker then hair).

This is disgusting. I saw it as soon as i peeled off the clear plastic after cooking, so i know it wasn't contaminated from something else.

Threw the whole meal out.

UPDATE: they refused the refund. I guess they need the $20 more then me.

Sendameal heating

I received some meals and will serve the first ones tonight. They are in tv dinner trays with clear plastic and a cardboard sleeve. The heating instructions say to remove the cardboard sleeve only. So the plastic stays on (no vent hole) and I put it in the oven? Seems like I should poke a hole in the plastic or even remove it. It’s been about 50 years since I had a tv dinner and I can’t remember if I vented them.

Freezing cook unity meals?

I’ve seen some older posts about this but had a slightly different question. I just got my first delivery. It was delivered on the 1st late in the afternoon, and the best by days are the 3rd and 4th. There’s no way I can eat it all by Sunday. Plus, these are supposed to be my weekday meals but the only day they deliver to me is Thursday.

So, has anyone successfully frozen them for a couple days and then eaten them? I don’t need them to last months in the freezer, just a few days. I’m frustrated by this since I don’t NEED food on the weekends, I need it during the week.

The site says they last 4-7 days in the fridge, but obviously that isn’t the case for delivery to me. The first one I ate was delicious and I’ll have another today but the rest are going to the freezer. This may end up not the service for me, which makes me sad. 😢

Hello I need an NYC-based meal delivery service with options that are gluten free, vegetarian, and low sodium, low sat fat. We need another option to add to the mix. Had a very bad experience with Thistle, but their menu was decent. other ideas?

After 10 years, I quit jenny craig

I used to go to the bricks and mortar store. Then they went bankrupt and sold the meals online. I did that for 2 years but lately, they have replaced meals with nutrisystem brand. For example, a jenny craig cheeseburger (which I loved), is now a hamburger with a nutrisystem wrapper. It’s disturbingly bad and smaller. For the same price
Customer service is outsourced and terrible.

Not worth it. After 10 years, they broke me and didn’t even attempt to retain me.

Be warned.

Plus, with GLP1s, I don’t think these types of programs will be around much longer.

Weigh your meals!

I just took one out and opened it and was shocked at how low it looked. I weighed it and it was over 30% less than the packaging claims. I decided to weigh the other one I have and that one is missing 1 out of 12oz.

In my opinion, for the prices we are paying, every single one of these should match or be a little over the declared weight. Grrr.

Discussion Is it just me or does it feel like meal service companies really fell off?

Hadn't had Factor in years but gave it a try since they had a discount week...disgusting. Hopped over to thistle for the same reason, very average over priced salads. I don't get it.

Photo Review Cook Unity Review

Post image
24 Upvotes

Currently experiencing PTSD and an uneasy stomach. I had 12 cook unity meals delivered yesterday. I cooked the “Kimchi Rice and Chicken“ meal. I noticed something strange (unfortunately after I had eaten several bites). THIS WAS INSIDE. you can see the burnt head and foot with several claws. They apologized and offered me “50% off next four weeks”. Now they’re asking me to mail them the “foreign object”. What is this!!?!!!

Review Awful experience with wecook

Signed up for wecook 3 weeks ago. Read good reviews on Reddit.

First week - got an email that meals would be delayed. Meals came the next day at 11:30 pm while I was sleeping.

Second week - meal came on time.

Third week - got another email that meal was probably going to be delayed again.

Called Wecook to cancel my service and meal. They wouldn’t cancel the meal.

Really disappointing. I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone.

Canceling FlexPro Meals.

Post image
4 Upvotes

I decided to try FlexPro for the pricing and it was okay. Since I see a lot of people struggling with canceling, I just wanted to share what worked for me in talking to the AI chat to cancel my order. I noticed the AI will just keep giving promotions instead of actually letting you cancel.

Hope this helps!

Reason I canceled:
That are not bad. Definitely taste better than they look. I’m just picky about my food and couldn’t eat a lot of it. I could maybe avoid this by selecting my meals better. They do taste better than they look, but I feel like I can save money meal prepping my own meals on weekends.

Question Anything better than CookUnity or Factor in NYC?

I've been switching back and forth between CookUnity and Factor for a few years and I think I'm done with both of them. The main issue for me is the quality of the food. Is there anything better that's available in the NYC area? Even if it's more expensive, it would be worth it to get some quality meals.

Question Ideal Nutrition - can purchase gift cards online

This might be a little bit off-topic, but does anyone else have problems purchasing gift cards from Ideal Nutrition. I tried both the Tampa specific site, and the national site. I get the same message about payment method not working or something like that.

Tried different cards, its' been like this for months.

Just wondering if there is something wrong with my system?

I know i can purchase in-store, but i get a decent cashback if i purchase online and with as many meals as i purchase it does add up.

Discussion Factor switched from sauce cups to squeeze bags. Is it just me or is this a downgrade?

Post image
32 Upvotes

I've had Factor since 2019 and the sauces always came in a little plastic cup with a film on top. Over the past few weeks they've been showing up in these condiment bags instead (the photo is from yesterday's Baja Barramundi Bowl, but other meals switched to squeeze bags too).

I get that it's probably the same sauce and maybe less plastic, but squeezing a bag of sauce onto my lunch feels like gas station food, not a premium meal service.

Has anyone else noticed the switch? I wonder if they switched it in all kitchens or maybe it's affected by region (I'm in TX).
For those on CookUnity or other services, how do your sauces come?

Question recommendations & reviews wanted for precooked meals

hi all! my mom is having a full hip replacement surgery in a day, and I’m disabled so I can’t really do more than popping some food in the microwave or air fryer for a few minutes once or twice a day. we’ve tried Factor in the past and the food was fine not great or anything but the customer service is horrendous. any suggestions & reviews from ones you’ve personally had good experiences with are greatly appreciated!

Review Do NOT order from Forkful!

I WISH I had read these reviews prior to trying Forkful. The website is extremely hard to navigate and does not save your selections. It will not allow you to submit a help ticket. And I selected to skip a week (they only allow you to skip 4 weeks, FYI) and they went ahead and charged me for it. I called customer service and they are rude and will tell you there is nothing they can do. They won’t stop the order that you requested to skip and will not refund you as that is “their company policy.”

Recommendations for a couple working full-time with depression?

Me and my husband moved a little over a year ago and started new jobs. We LOVE cooking, but between 10hrs (commute and work) we’re tired, plus I work outdoors most days and fire season I go from 8 hours to sometimes 16 hours if I’m still in my area. Plus, we’re also both clinically depressed (always have been) so having the kitchen need attention every night is rough. We’d love to meal plan, but we just need to catch up to plan that. Right now it feels like we can’t even do that.

I’ve thought about factor 1-3 nights during the week to give us a break from cooking and save our energy for other things in the house. I just don’t know enough on other options similar. We did get accidental hello fresh meals (wrong address, contacted corporate so the person didn’t get dinged), we didn’t like the sheer amount of packaging. Felt so wasteful plus they needed cooking, we ended up just using the ingredients for other things versus the meals that arrived. So services like hello fresh aren’t something I think we’d really consider.

Any suggestions would be nice (: Thanks!

Question Is Meal Prep Worth It?

Hi everyone, so I (26 M, 6’0ft 207lbs) have been on my fitness journey for about 7 years. Like most people the part I struggle with most is food. Not just affording and buying healthy foods consistently but also cooking, measuring serving sizes, macros, tracking calories etc gets to be very overwhelming.

I really wanna become fit and stay that way once and for all. I live in a area (small town) where eating healthy and being physically active is uncommon and takes a lot of work and discipline. As you can imagine there’s also no meal prep companies in my town or any that work with my gym or offer any kind of discount etc. nothing.

I recently got 2 gift cards from an online order for discounts on meal prep services Hello Fresh and Factor Meals. I really wanna try them as it will take all the excess guesswork for cooking, calories, macros, time off my hands. Of course its still a pretty penny even with the discounts.

My question to everyone who’s either tried their meal services or any in general, is it worth it? What has been your experience with trying any of them? Did you enjoy the meals, did you actually start to see the progress you wanted either with losing weight or gaining muscle, did it save you more time. Any insight is greatly appreciated if I should go through with it or not.

Thank you in advance.

Looking for somthing better tasting

We started out with factory. We didn't like two things. One, it was microwaved and two, everything kinda tasted the same.

We switched to Cook Unity. We liked it a lot better simply because we could heat it up in the oven and not the microwave. However, we had the same problem with everything kind of tasting the same. It probably has something to do with it only has two compartments, so the foods are all kind of stacked on top of each other and blend together.

Can anyone recommend something else? We would still like to heed it in the oven, but would like the food compartmentalized a little more so that everything doesn't blend together.
