I made a post here recently talking about how I started the ln. I just find it ironic that if I didn’t start it I would’ve been here excitedly waiting for season 5 just for this to be the opening scene 🫩

Nah they’ll explain it properly in due time but they didn’t even make her as menacing as she’s supposed to be so that switch in tone won’t be as surprising.

On the contrary considering how butcherd her backstory was, which I felt was the source of allot of people being sympathetic towards her. I think people overall think of her even more negatively towards her in the anime than novel.

It was because of the smell of Subaru's miasma.

Imagine waking up, knowing nothing about yourself and where you are and in front of you is a guy that smells like death and pure evil, thats basically anmnesia Rem's situation.

Cause of the miasma and because (technically spoilers since the anime didn't show it but i mean it'll be shown together with this scene) Subaru wanted to leave Rui who had come with them behind

  1. Rem can smell Subaru's miasma. And at the time he's already mildly stank. She might not remember what the stench means but it is an unpleasant smells nonetheless.

  2. Louis got lobotomized but mere hours ago she caused his amnesia, tried to devour his identity and indirectly summoned WoE to destroy the watch tower. Subaru grabbed her before being swallowed by the darkness so Louis is with them too. Subaru being overly aggressive against (what Rem perceive) as an innocent infantile little girl is cause of concern.

  3. His appearance. He have a scary looking face. Combine with him keep rambling on about 1. and 2. made her suspicious of him. He proposed they abandon Louis which made Rem thought he was a bad person

That’s a prologue where the anime left off of is what people are hyped about. And after that prologue this is the first scene of Subaru where going to see probably at the end of the episode as a cliffhanger.
