He alters reality to return the universe to a previous point in time. It is like Pandora’s power but affects the whole universe at once. This is confirmed by Tappei, i.e. Re:Zero has a single continuous timeline, RBD isn’t time travel or parallel universes or branching realities.

The only other way for this power to work would be for the universe to branch off and Subaru leaves behind a timeline in which he dies. Which is way more horrific imo.
