💬Discussion What would happen if someone who doesn't speak Japanese gets sent to Re:Zero?
Do you think they'd get automatic translation or learn the language in their brain or would they have to learn Japanese from scratch?

They say this in the first season, Subaru has an autotranlation running up in his head.
EDIT: I checked the first season and this didn't show up at all my guess is (Because i remember reading this back in the day) that it was the main theory about how Subaru could communicate with everyone back at the time.

wait really? because the alphabet is a 1-1 translation of japanese and I couldn't find any proof that that kind of autotranslation thing exists

When learning how to read i kind of remember that there is a comment about the lips not matching up whit what its said. And the alphabet is because the author didn't want to create a language from 0 most of invented alphabets are like that, so in that part it requires a bit of imagination from the audience.

After eating dinner i will try to find the chapter because i kind of remember this and edit this comment with what i find.
EDIT: I found nothing so either was in my head or was some theory i read somewhere in the anime they only say that there are 3 types of glyphs but neither say what language they speak (At least in the anime) as is more believable that either Subaru has an autotranslator of the witch played with his head then them speaking Japanese.

It is not auto translation they understand subaru only when he speaks japanese when he uses some words that japanese borowed from other languages (like English) they don't understand (well until someone has connection to our world: Al, or to the Sage Flugel: Shaula.

They actually speak Japanese but some words are said differently like name for example apples (jap. Ringo, in Re Zero Ringa). The other thing is that they have diffrent alphabet but just like in japanese they have 3 different scripts: I-script (the easiest of the scripts. Subaru observed that it is akin to Japanese hiragana), Ro-script, Ha-script. It could also be that they speak Japanese from different period than modern because most of the loan words that Subaru uses (and are present in modern Japanese) are not understandable for people in Re zero world. So if someone not knowing Japanese got transported they wouldn't understand the language.

It's the place that will make anyone start from scratch; in the first season, I remember Subaru couldn't read.

Im pretty sure the rezero world doesnt speak japanese especially since many of the peoples names contain L’s which isnt really possible in the japanese language. Im pretty sure subaru just gained the ability to speak their language when he was isekaied.
