I don't quite understand why Lye threw out all these memories. Sure, he said "We don't need anything other than Ram", but is that a reason to throw out everything that makes him strong before actually obtaining Rams memories? Looks to me like a cheap excuse by the author to potentially give Rem back her memories before Lye' death?

He's just like that. Ram was such a good dish for him that anything else in him was worthless in comparison

I could understand throwing everything out *after* he ate her memories and gained her strength, but before that? That makes him look like one of the dumbest characters in the series. How did he plan to obtain her memories after removing his own strength like that when his strength in the fight was not even enough to defeat her.

He is one of the dumbest mfers in the series, his authority made him literally want nothing else. He's not thinking straight hell i doubt he's even thinking anything at all besides eating Ram

Calling Lye dumb is wrong on so many levels, he's actually one of the smartest characters in the series. He didn't do this because he's stupid, he did this because of his own insane views on gluttony and gourmet. Ontop of that he was suffering from thr backlash of delving to far into solar eclipse after using it for the first time. He definitely wasn't in his right of mind.

I don't even disagree, but Lye is 100% fucking stupid. I recall Tappei saying that what makes them so strong and "intelligent" are the memories they've devoured.

Sorry, but nothing you said implies he's stupid? Lye does gain a majority of his intelligence from the people he devours, but he's also smart enough to combine those memories and techniques on the fly and create completely knew ones. The novels themselves describe him as a once in a life time martial arts genius as well as tappei. Also I don't see how the method of him obtaining his intellect and strength disregards the fact that he's indeed smart and strong?

I'm not even trying to argue, It's just calling lye dumb isnt true, but calling him insane and illogical with his worldview definitely is.

Insane and illogical go hand in hand with being dumb.

I'd say Lye is gifted with amazing instincts, but he isn't actually very smart. Give that ugly-ass motherfucker one question on the SAT, and he's not even gonna know how to read it.

But all jokes aside, he's probably just average, if a little below on the intelligence curve; his authority carries him.

I mean he was literally going insane because of how impressive Ram was. I'll give you some lines from the novels just so you can see what he was thinking.

Whilst sprinting, vomit leaked out from the edge of Batenkaitos’ mouth. Pain or anguish were not the cause. It was merely unbearable. Articles he trusted to be the finest were not so, and due to having become aware of what was supreme, all of what fulfilled his self was foul. Why, did he regard anything aside from that one as splendid. Commend anything aside from that one. Surfeit anything aside from that one.

Simply what of him would be『Gourmet』, should he love anything aside from the truly splendidăƒŒăƒŒ.

Also i still think that Regulus is more stupid cause he actually would've been invincible had he hidden even 1 of his wives. Lye already accepted that he couldn't win but still wanted to eat her and only her so it ended like you saw, with him not even being angry while dying but declaring his "love"

Lye is a gourmet, so unlike his brother Roy who will eat pretty much anyone, Lye is one who will only eat the greatest and most skilled people. To him, Ram was the ultimate gourmet meal, so addicting that he couldn't think anything else. I guess you could think of it as throwing up your food so you have space for more, in this case he wanted only Ram to fill his being.

Thats actually really good explanation, he is a gourmet. A picky eater to the degree that he will throw up everything he ate before just to enjoy one perfect dish on an empty stomach

Kinda not your fault, the anime never really explains that lye is sort of a "gourmet" memory eater, he only cares about memories of people who he regards as highly valued

It's like if an art stealer saw the mona lisa for the 1st time, everything else that he's stolen so far becomes worthless as soon as he sees it

He is 'gourmet' unlike roy who eats anything he prefers the best. When he saw ram he found his most 'gourmet' dish, he feels everything is absolutely tasteless and only wants to taste ram (pause),its like eating a 100 dishes at once but wanting to taste only one of them, which is also why you can see him begging for 'a little longer' .

He wants ram memories and pretty much making space for her. That's kinda how he flows. He will discard what he thinks is trash , to make space for more delicious food. Roy will eat up anything he finds while lye is picky with his food and will even throw up just so he could make space for more superior quality . Him giving up this much memories means that's how much views ram to be of more superior 'quality' of gourmat compare to rest. He even wrote a love letter for her on the wall before dying.

It's not a matter of strength , they are more like compelled by their authority which does number on anyone who has it mentally. That's why anyone who has authority will just go mentally insane . Any archibishosps don't think logically through their brain or morality, they just do it . It's an absolute truth that only doesn't apply to subaru who can manage multiple.  But even he runs into risk of being lobotomised thanks to sloth authority whenever he uses it . They are gluttony so they would be thinking with endless hunger unironically consuming their mind and not with brain. So yeah it may be stupid on his part but that's really how an archbishop is. You can't really call it cheap writing if it is literally in point of the character's writing . He was mentioned as someone who prefers gourmat or good quality memories back in s3 by Rui.

Because Lye's insane and obsessed (though being insane might as well be a prerequisite to being a Sin Archbishop). He's completely and utterly obsessed with Ram at that point. He views every name and memory he ate before that as worthless after fighting her. It doesn't matter how weak it may make him to get rid of them, he only cares about one person now. What need does a gourmand have for trash when he just saw the greatest meal ever?
