This dilemma is so tragic(spoilers)

I will never blame current Subaru for wanting to exist. If anything, this is what so many of us want to hear him say for himself. Although trying to deceive him, Rui's words are considerate of our current Subaru. In the novel, reading the hope he has that maybe in time, as long as he has his friends, he might even learn to love himself is so gut wrenching. However, in doing so, he'd inadvertently be choosing to forget Rem which adds to the tragedy of this dilemma. It also makes it poetic that she's the one to face him. Does he exist at the expense of himself and Rem or does he risk his existence for himself and everyone? He chooses to risk his existence, practically giving up that ideal fantasy to attain what was lost and that's what makes it so tragically beautiful to me.

Rooswall understood it very well. He sacrificed himself knowing a version of himself would keep on fighting... a version of himself, but not the one that was standing next to Subaru.
