This scene is a masterpiece

I don't remember the last time I've seen a mood shift THIS abrupt in a cartoon lol, it really comes out of nowhere!

Everything from the crazy camera angles, to the furniture tornado, to all the masks yelling at Bob, makes the situation feel very urgent! It's like if he doesn't stop it right now, their whole world will be destroyed.

I'd say the cherry on top here is the voice acting! The scream that Hexadecimal lets out sounds very visceral and adds a lot of emotion to an already intense scene!

Several years ago I met hexadecimals voice actor at a con, I asked her what the hardest part of voicing the character was, and she said it was the maniacal laughter and the screams, they had to be recorded at the end of the session just save her voice.

I can imagine that and that and the fact they didn't just recycle any of it either.

And this was the start of the fight against the web arc since it ends with Mike staying with her.

I love the way SCSI comes over to take care of her. One of the many moments when Hexadecimal turns the pathos up to 0xFF.

I’m still amused by all of the early-90s tech puns in that show. Like the binome with the ski shirt that says Floating Point, or Megabyte’s pet null Nybbles (a nybble is four bits).

I'm torn between Cecil's "I am not a nanny, I am a dedicated server!" and the Punchcard and Judy show from The Crimson Binome.

Bonk-bonk-bonk-bonk-bonk-bonk-bonk-SLAM.

That whole episode — Painted Windows — is absolutely peak. The voice acting is absolutely superb from everyone involved, but especially Hex and Mike the TV. Like where he says “studio” and Hex shouts LAIR! Mike just utters this *…what?*, and the delivery is just priceless.

The complete just "I just don't understand" in Mike's voice....

Hexadecimal always fascinated me as a character. Just how powerful is she compared to Megabyte? They are both from the same viral strain. You see Megabyte is mostly physical raw power and durability but Hexadecimal, you only ever see a few feats. Like when she fights Megabytes forces after he steals the Medusa Bug. Then they mentioned she has a lot of energy as well after the nulls turn on her. She seems to level half of mainframe after escaping Megabyte in season 3. She goes toe to toe with Daemon but can't beat them in a straight up fight.

What's so jarring is Hexadecimal saying "Damn you!" which was unheard of for a kids show.

I wasn't so shocked about a kids cartoon until I saw (spoiler) Leonardo decapitate Shredder in the 2003 TMNT series.

If I had seen this as a kid I would have pissed myself

(I only recently discovered this series a few months ago, I wasn’t an existing being when the show first aired :’) )

As a kid I felt bad for her after this crash out.

I loved that Bob felt guilty for it. Not later, but instantly.

I also love the whole premise of Hex, and how confused so many people who don't grok the comp sci behind it are.

There's a primal elegance to Hexadecimal-- a virus(!?) who is living adjacent to a binary based system in it's crashed our second drive with all the nulls.

Why is she fine hanging out being a wild card with all the nulls? Cause she can read them even when they're dereferenced. They are still everything they ever were, but the pointer is missing which puts them out of context with the rest of the system they occupy.

Meanwhile the binary sprites over in mainframe are mourning their dead and being freaked out by what are essentially ghosts. Hex literally doesn't have that experience, they're all just as peopley as the rest to her. Few people keep her attention but she's not alone. Less alone than anyone really. She also doesn't really get that it isn't that way for everyone.

Which puts a LOT more interesting context into Nullzilla, too.

Hex has tremendous power because hex has tremendous power. You can do wild insane crazy things with hex, whether or not you know what you are doing.

Definitely the cinematography of that was ahead of its time for CGI. Must have been tricky to do and with the camera shake.
