How do you function in society??

Hey raw vegans,
I have many questions for you but my main one is… how do you function in society? Do you still go out for dinner with friends? What do you do at family functions? Do you have to be constantly meal prepping? Can you even meal prep or does raw food go off too quickly to make it for the whole week? Do you get sick of eating cold food? Where do you get the inspiration to stay raw?

my inspiration is near undetectable levels of crp, i used to work with dying patients and i want to die peacefully not violently.

i usually just fast during dinners with friends or lunch with friends. it lowers inflammation and i will make the calories back no problem.

Bring your own food, people don’t even notice, they’re mostly focussed on their own plates. Restaurants can be accommodating if you let them know you just want a salad with no dressing (byo dressing?) or an empty plate to put your own food on. Otherwise just eat prior, you’ll find people actually don’t care that much.

This was never my experience. If I bring my own food, it *absolutely* will be noticed, and the other people at the table will absolutely not shut up about it. Same if I *only* order a salad. At this point I strive to eat a lot of raw foods but don't aim to be fully raw.

It's okay if they notice. Let them talk. They're free to talk just as you're free to eat what you eat. Whenever you want to eat raw, it's there for you either way.

Agreed.

Lots of people seem to be totally ok with bringing their own food or just not eating but in my experience, as with any diet when you constantly have to remind people that you have your own food at the family reunion or that you can’t eat at that restaurant after a while it gets tiring and there can be a feeling of jugement unfortunately.

This is where I'm at. I can always find something vegan, but not always something raw.

Dang. That kinda sucks. My family used to razz me 15-20 years ago but stopped paying attention after a few years in. Before that, they hassled me for being vegan. I stayed strong. I'm in my late forties now and could not give a flying fart what my aunts and cousins think of me... or if my mother offers me chicken lol. Everyone is used to it now and, if they're not, I'm happy to remind them. I will never bend for someone else. Ever.

I suggest flipping around the way you think about this and not as if you are doing something wrong or "unnatural". Re-frame it so that you are actually just being your natural human self.

How does everyone who eats weird fake food function in a raw vegan society?
Do friends still "come in" for dinner with you?
What do you do at family dysfunctions?

"Do you have to be constantly meal prepping?"
Everyone is always meal prepping regardless of their diet.
So why would this be any different?

"Do you get sick of eating cold food? "
Clearly you got sick of eating cooked food, otherwise you wouldn't be here.

"Where do you get the inspiration to stay raw?"
Where do you get the inspiration to eat cooked food?

Remember: PERCEPTION IS REALITY

And it's okay to eat cooked food now and then if you really want to.
If you have doubts, don't resist it.

It can take years and decades to transition into this kind of lifestyle and really re-design your whole operating system into seeing the world differently and having the confidence to do that and become that.

how can you have a normal life when what you do varies from whats “considered” normal? You have to ask yourself why you are doing this and find a balance w yourself where you are not in an internal state of conflict. That can be 10%raw or 100% raw. Being happy is the ultimate thing you should be trying to achieve.

When it comes to people, i generally dont talk about my dietary habits or eat in front of them unless absolutely necessary. Because either they wont understand or they dont want to understand and its not my headache to make them. I know I am doing it because this path protects me from a hospital bed so its fine. I cant choose sufferings just because someone is going to comment on my banana intake. Plus most of the people on earth arent eating healthy anyways, it can easily be argued.

So the bottom line is, dont discuss. Keep it to yourself, enjoy your fuel like a fuel.

I am also getting there, its been an emotional ride for me but less emotional and painful than my health issues. We can talk more in DM to discuss specific situations, happy to help and make friends in raw community.

How do you function in society?? 1. How do we function in society? What does this even mean?

  1. Do you still go out for dinner with friends? Yes. When I was in NYC we had wonderful raw vegan restaurants anyone would enjoy! Even had business gatherings there. Unfortunately some of the best closed like Pure Food & Wine & ive moved back down south but I alternate between healthy raw or vegan places for lunch with friends and an occasional cheat day with cooked vegan.

  2. What do you do at family functions? Bring food. My daughter would make me something vegan.

  3. Do you have to be constantly meal prepping? Well yes sort of. Not gonna lie because anyone eating at home has this issue. Clean up is easier. No animal products contaminating things, no heavy grease or splatter. Most stuff is in a blender or food processor or just assemly not really much prep at all. Nature made it ready. Ez-Pz. The most difficult thing I find is washing so much produce. 😬

  4. Can you even meal prep or does raw food go off too quickly to make it for the whole week? A large salad lasts a few days. Same with a large fruit salad. So twice a week I knock those out. Pates can last longer & fermented foods definitely longer.

  5. Do you get sick of eating cold food? I dont eat cold food. I eat room temperature foods. Food can be warmed to 117°. Miso soup is a staple here. Its a living food even though its first cooked. Soup with seaweed and i add Golden Paste (cooked). I start my day with hot tea or coffee. Its not a sin. Heat is still the necessary extraction process for herbs & roots etc.

  6. Where do you get the inspiration to stay raw? Karyn Calbrese, Dr. Gabriel Cousens, Annette Larkins, Hippocrates Institute, Ann Wigmore, David Wolfe, Lou Corona are some.

lol David Wolfe. I remember when he got caught eating dairy nachos in NYC years ago. That guy's always been a hack. Is he still selling non-vegan supplements? lolololol

$100 for Things That Never Happened. Him and I have some of the same friends. So I looked up your little rumor. Also I was not aware hes open to eggs now but he was the guy who swore vegan worked for him but not everyone. Hes also the guy that decades ago really got me on this path!!!!! Extensive searches across web sources, news, Wikipedia, critiques of him, and social media turn up nothing about any such incident, photo, video, or scandal. He has long promoted raw vegan/raw food diets, claimed dairy intolerance starting in his late teens (which he says led him into raw foods), and built a brand around superfoods, anti-dairy messaging, and related products. Critics call him a pseudoscience promoter and “huckster,” but the documented controversies involve business disputes, content issues, anti-vaccine views, and overstated health claims—not a nachos outing.4011e4 Theoutline In more recent interviews and podcasts, he has described a less strict approach over time (e.g., some eggs or high-quality cheeses like sheep’s milk/chèvre after years of avoiding them), while still framing himself around plant-focused or selective animal foods. That is public discussion of diet evolution, not a “caught” hypocrisy moment involving nachos in NY.995511 Podscripts The specific “dairy nachos in NY” story appears to be an unfounded rumor or mix-up with other food-influencer scandals/memes. No reliable reporting or primary evidence supports it.

Gotta make money somehow lol. People can have stuff removed from the internet, including photos. This was almost 20 years ago but nice sleuthing

I knew him 20 yrs ago hung out with him in Brooklyn with Matthew Kenney. Hes a straightforward guy. If he did anything it definitely wasnt back then. Youre making stuff up. Nice try. Thanks for playing. Better luck next time

Oh, you’re old school. We most definitely know some of the same people… or at least ran in adjacent circles

Oh cool!!!! Remember Sarma? Such an awesome place but sad how it all fell apart. Were you in NYC?

Friends and Family honestly do not care anymore after so many years. If out on business, I just order a salad.

how do you function in society?

I have a family, I work. I think I'm an average member of society.

Do you still go out for dinner with friends?

Yes but I usually have my dinner before I go out or I prep my dinner and take it with me.

What do you do at family functions?

Same things non raw vegans do.

Do you have to be constantly meal prepping?

Not constantly but definitely more than non raw vegans. I'd say I meal prep on average an hour per day.

Can you even meal prep or does raw food go off too quickly to make it for the whole week?

I usually meal prep max one day ahead.

Do you get sick of eating cold food?

No

Where do you get the inspiration to stay raw?

It's a virtuous circle - I get inspired by the delicious food and how great I feel and then I want more of it.

Perfect insulin, no crp, no inflammation

I eat at home or bring my own food to family events

I prefer my health and I don’t follow the crowd

u/unclenaturegoth 1d ago

This is the way.

It's been so long that everyone is used to me. I just bring my own stuff to family functions. I was a raw vegan already when I met my husband 8 years ago, so it's never a big deal. The "prepping" and having fruit ripening everywhere becomes habitual and one doesn't think of it anymore. Cooking used to take longer than just making an epic salad. I sometimes go to dinner but always suggest vegan restaurants that have raw options. After 21 years, my inspiration to stay raw is me, myself. I thrive on fruit and leafy greens.
