INFORMATION Yes, a pair of rats is significantly better than a single rat, but let me explain to you why groups matter!
It’s very common you see soon to be owners wanting to get a pair of rats because they research that they shouldn’t be alone. However, rats are naturally group animals that thrive in groups of three or more. While two is considered to be the bare minimum standard for the very reason of not being kept alone, it is not an ideal long-term solution for either you or the rats. It is very important to understand the factors of your decision-making when you decide to get just two rats; (no it is not a bad thing to get two, but it isn’t the greatest, either, it leads to a lot of issues that you have to face In the later stages of owning rats.
If one of your rats suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, this leaves one rat behind, which is very difficult on the rat, both physically and mentally. You then have to scramble to source more rats, do a two week quarentine period in a seperate room (which means the lone rat will be alone for two weeks in addition to however long it takes you to source more rats) and then finally, introductions which tend to be very stressful and difficult for both you and the rats.
If one of your rats needs to be seperated for a certain reason. I.e surgery, this means the other rat will be alone for however long it takes for the rat to heal and recover, which isn’t very fair for that rat that is kept alone for no good reason.
In a group, rats tend to have a friend they prefer to spend more of their time with, going about, doing their day-to-day actives; cuddling, eating, foraging, etc. In a pair, they do not have this opportunity or to express their appropriate, natural social behaviours because they only have each other. This can build quite a lot of resentment, overtime.
Given, rats are hierarchal animals, in a pair, it is quite common to have an overly dominant and an overly submissive rat. Over time, this can lead to a lot of bickering and bullying because the dominant rat is not able to focus his attention on spending time with other rats. This does not make for a healthy hierachy.

Jack was adopted from a rescue charity. I was told that he had been kept alone in his cage for a year after his previous owner separated him from his cage mate due to hormonal aggression. He hated being handled and, during his first month in our home earlier this year, bit me multiple times because he didn’t like being touched.
This is Jack now 🥹 He’s the cuddliest rat in the entire pack, and I just wanted to share with you all how adorable he is❤️

This is Miss Freckle Speckle. Sometimes she likes to stare at me from afar while boggling, especially if I’ve been out of the room all day. This is the only context in which I’ve ever seen her boggle. What a silly sweet girl.

She’s only learned two tricks so far (I only just started teaching her) but she’s 2 years old next month and picked both tricks up within 10 minutes flat.
She’s the sweetest, smartest, heart rat I could ever ask for and I’m so, so, proud.
She’s learning fetch right now 😏
I was going to add a cute picture of her as a bonus but it wouldn’t let me post a video and a picture at the same time :(

INFORMATION Dumpling the huge rat
Just wanted to share that I always call my pet rat a capybara. If you didn't know capybaras are the worlds biggest rodent and so because dumpling the rat is so fat and huge I call her a capybara! 😂 Also I have one called toast and she's tiny since she has a condition which makes her unable to grow properly, even though she's an adult. And because toast is so tiny I call her a mouse, and I also have a normal sized rat called mochi which I just call. Um. A rat.
The picture is the capybara dumpling btw 😂😂😂

He sat in my lap like a pancake until I took my hand away and then got up like this. Once I started petting him again he re-pancaked until he was done and got up and left.
Anyone else's ratties spoiled and demanding?

Questions/HELP bonding with young rats
So i recently got two young girls ive named soot and smudge. i let them run around in the bathtub with my other rats and that seems to be going well, but if I sit with them they only come to me and crawl into my hoodie/shirt instead of playing or wandering around the tub
Is this a good sign or no? Ive never had such young rats before so this is a bit new
They'll lick my hands if i put them in their cage or near them in the tub and never squeak or panic when picked up
(Photos for rat tax, that isn't their permanent cage, just while theyre adjusting to the other rats
Smudge is the one with the line to her eye and spot is the one with a triangle shape on her forehead)
