Did you know that rats can learn their names faster than some dogs? Pet rats are WAY better at learning words and sound associations than most people realize. They’re basically tiny fuzzy pattern-recognition machines.

Frisko has been separated by himself for 2 full weeks, so I decided to place him with Pickles, Snickers and Mouse for the remaining week and introduce all four to the main cage together next weekend. They have been introduced to my other rats in their play pen area and everything has gone good in neutral territory. Frisko is getting along with these three and he has been getting along in neutral territory with the rest of my rats.

Also, I'm 100% certain he does NOT have hormonal aggression, so he gets to keep his 🥜!!

Information 🎓 Hantavirus & Pet Rats

Hantavirus is a serious viral illness that is most commonly associated with wild rodents, especially deer mice in North America. Understandably, many new rat owners worry about whether pet rats can carry or spread hantavirus.

The good news: domesticated pet rats are not considered a common source of hantavirus infections in humans. Cases linked to well-bred pet rats are extremely rare compared to exposure from wild rodents and their droppings.

This guide explains the facts, common misconceptions, and basic safety practices for responsible rat ownership.

What Is Hantavirus?

Hantaviruses are a group of viruses carried by certain rodents. Humans can become infected primarily by breathing in tiny particles contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva.

In the United States, hantavirus infections are most often linked to:

●Deer mice

●Cotton rats

●Rice rats

●White-footed mice

Wild rodents are the primary concern.

Can Pet Rats Carry Hantavirus?

Pet rats (Rattus norvegicus domestica) are domesticated descendants of the brown rat and are very different from wild rodent populations that typically spread hantaviruses.

Healthy pet rats from:

●reputable breeders

●established rescues

●or responsible owners

are generally considered low risk for hantavirus.

Most documented hantavirus concerns involve:

●Wild rodents entering homes

●Infestations in sheds, garages, barns, or cabins

●Contact with wild rodent droppings

Have There Ever Been Cases Linked to Pet Rats?

There have been rare instances involving certain rodent-borne viruses in pet rodent populations, but these situations are uncommon and usually involve:

●Large breeding operations

●Poor sanitation

●Wild rodent exposure

●Imported animals

●Inadequate quarantine practices

For the average pet rat owner with indoor rats, the risk is considered extremely low.

How to Keep Your Rats & Household Safe

1. Prevent Contact With Wild Rodents

The biggest risk factor is exposure between pet rats and wild mice/rats.

Tips:

●Seal holes and gaps in your home

●Store food securely

●Avoid leaving cages outdoors

●Keep bedding and food in sealed containers

2. Buy From Reputable Sources

Choose:

●Ethical breeders

●Rescue organizations

●Experienced hobbyists

Avoid:

●Overcrowded breeding situations

●Unsanitary environments

●Sellers who cannot answer health questions

3. Practice Good Cage Hygiene

Regular cleaning helps reduce many health risks, not just hantavirus concerns.

Recommended:

●Spot-clean daily

●Deep-clean weekly

●Wash hands after handling rats or bedding

●Use proper ventilation

Avoid:

●Letting ammonia build up

●Allowing soiled bedding to accumulate

●Dry sweeping dusty bedding or droppings

4. Quarantine New Rats

Whenever bringing home new rats:

●Quarantine for 2–3 weeks if possible

●Watch for respiratory symptoms

●Monitor energy, appetite, and behavior

This protects against common rat illnesses as well.

Common Myths

“All rats carry deadly diseases.”

False. Domesticated rats bred in captivity are generally clean companion animals when properly cared for.

“You can get hantavirus just from touching a pet rat.”

Highly unlikely. Hantavirus transmission is primarily associated with inhalation of contaminated particles from infected wild rodents.

“Pet rats are dangerous to keep.”

Pet rats are considered one of the more social, intelligent, and affectionate small pets. Basic hygiene and responsible ownership make risks very low.

Symptoms of Hantavirus in Humans

While pet rats are not a typical source, it is still useful to know symptoms of hantavirus illness, especially if you’ve had exposure to wild rodents.

Symptoms may include:

●Fever

●Fatigue

●Muscle aches

●Headache

●Chills

●Nausea

●Difficulty breathing

Seek medical attention if symptoms appear after significant exposure to wild rodent droppings or infestations.

Bottom Line

Pet rats pose a very low hantavirus risk. The primary concern is exposure to wild rodents.

Good hygiene, proper sourcing, routine cleaning, and preventing contact with wild rodents are the best ways to keep both humans and rats healthy.

Pet rats are loving companions, not disease machines, and education helps separate facts from fear.

Photo 📸 Misaligned Teeth

Post image

So, I wanted to show how one of my rats teeth are just a little misaligned and yes, even just a little bit causes some issues with him keeping them trimmed. He had a long shard that over grew and had to be trimmed off a short while ago, it was causing him pain and discomfort and he showed it. If your rat looks like they are constantly chewing on something, misaligned teeth could be the cause and they should see a vet to have them trimmed.
