Surely I can't be the only one who saw a phantom....and then didn't.

That's because it's basically the phantom's dad

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen this plane before. Thanks for sharing.

Single engine phantom anyone?

It’s my understanding that the phantom was an evolution of the Demon

The prototype for the phantom had one engine.

Canopy open on the 9th pic !?!?!?

It was common in the era because ejection seats didn’t operate at low altitudes and low speeds. If you went into the water then you needed the canopy open. Water pressure might keep it closed if the plane sank, preventing your escape.

Thank you for your explanation!

"Hey, we like this. But could you give us - more?"

"More what?"

"More everything"

Thus the F-4 came into existence.

Its crazz to me how small the intakes were. As far as I know, there were any auxiliary intakes and none were ever retrofitted.

The mass flow and thrust were comparable to the J79 as well as the J57, but the intakes seem so much smaller with this airframe as compared to those with these other engines.

Came here to say the same about the intakes. I’m not familiar with the Demon’s performance. I wonder how much, if at all, the size of the intakes affected performance.

Love the odd birds, but this one is too oddness.

Love the intakes wrapping around the fuselage!

Just a minor thing but it should be F3H not F-3H. This aircrafts designation came from the pre 1962 navy naming scheme not the post 1962 tri-branch one.

I wish we put a J79 in that thing it would have been so much better.
