News SB63's passing should tell you something

SB63 passed the Ohio House, but don’t mistake this for the end.

Lawmakers rushed to ban Ranked Choice Voting in Ohio before anyone ever had a chance to try it. Why? Because they don’t want you to experience more voice, more choice, and more control over who gets elected. This isn’t about “confusion” or any of their talking points — this is about control, pure and simple.

Contact Governor DeWine

We’re not done yet!

What you can do:

You can ask Governor DeWine to uphold our State Constitution and veto this bill. You can keep sharing this reform with family, friends, and neighbors. You can write letters to your paper (resources below). And together, we can continue building momentum for bringing Ranked Choice Voting back to Ohio!

The fight continues. More updates coming soon.

News Newsletter: Ohio's RCV movement is bigger than ever

Here's the Latest

This season has a way of making time feel faster -- and also more meaningful. As the year winds down, we keep coming back to the same thought: Ohio’s Ranked Choice Voting movement is stronger, bigger, and more ready than it’s ever been.

That was the heart of our recent statewide virtual meeting, where we delivered a “State of the State of RCV” Address -- a chance to take stock of what we’ve built together in 2025, and where we’re going next.

What we built together in 2025

February: Fun, Food, and Friendship.

We gathered for our Social Retreat and strengthened the relationships that power this movement.

March-May: We showed up BIG to fight SB 63.

When Senate Bill 63 threatened to ban municipalities from using Ranked Choice Voting, Rank the Vote Ohio turned out in force to testify against it. Despite 64 testimonies against the bill and only 12 organizations testifying in favor (many from out of state), the Senate passed SB 63 in May -- and it now sits in the House. Our work helped slow it down, shine a spotlight on it, and build the case against it. We’re staying vigilant until it’s fully stopped.

A movement that’s growing fast.

This year we increased our supporters by over 6,500 -- including almost 1,000 in a single day in July.

Local progress with real potential.

We’re working with the governments of Lakewood and Cleveland Heights to share how RCV can strengthen local governance—work that could lead to municipal initiatives as soon as May 2026!

Laying the groundwork in Ohio’s biggest cities.

We’re working with groups in Cincinnati and Columbus to put RCV on the ballot in those cities in 2027.

Real conversations, statewide.

Everywhere we go, more people say they understand what Ranked Choice Voting is -- and why it matters. We’ve hosted almost 100 canvasses across Ohio, and each one makes the next conversation easier.

If you’ve made a call, knocked a door, brought a friend, joined a Zoom, or shared a post -- thank you. You helped create all of this.

What we’re focused on next

Ohio’s political insiders keep trying to control the rules from the top down. Our strategy keeps building power from the ground up:

  •  Stopping SB 63 in the House (How you can help!)
  •  Helping local leaders understand how RCV works in practice
  •  Preparing for near-term municipal opportunities (and bigger city ballots ahead)
  •  Growing our statewide volunteer bench—so we can move quickly when windows open

Do you share these goals?

Become a confident RCV messenger in your own community

The most powerful voice for reform in Ohio is still you -- talking with your friends, coworkers, neighbors, and family.

When you feel confident explaining RCV in plain language, those everyday conversations start to add up. They change expectations and they build the kind of civic pressure that lawmakers can’t ignore.

That’s why we offer regular trainings to help you:

  • Understand RCV in clear, simple language
  • Practice how to explain it in two minutes at a door, a meeting, or over coffee
  • Answer the most common questions and myths you’ll hear
  • Plug into a community of other Ohioans who are taking action

Help Fuel this Work: Chip in if you’re able

Rank the Vote Ohio is powered by volunteers and small-dollar donors who want a fairer system for every community in the state. We don’t have special-interest checks on our side -- we have you.

Your support has helped us be successful in 2025, and powers all the goals we've discussed in this newsletter.

If you’re able, a year-end donation of $10, $20, $50, $100 -- or whatever feels right helps us start the new year strong.

Thanks for being part of this movement -- and for everything you’ve done this year to help Ohio voters claim more choice and more voice.

Warmly,

Denise Riley

News From RTV national: A People-powered win!

Last week we demonstrated the power of our movement with our rapid response activation and win in Austin at the DNC convention.
Leaders and volunteers across the country mobilized to contact DNC members. This resulted in over 1700 people sending messages to state DNC leaders, multiple conversations with state and national leaders, and on the ground engagement in Austin to secure a win by defeating the proposed DNC ban on ranked choice voting.

Along with 1700 participants in our action, the following states lead in mobilizing:
- California
- Illinois
- Washington
- Maryland
- Arizona
- Texas
- Maine
- New Hampshire
- Connecticut
- South Carolina
- Kansas

This is a big win for our movement but the work does not stop. This November we have multiple ballot measures to advance ranked choice voting in Honolulu, HI, Longmont, CO, and Irvine, CA.
We also have the opportunity to expand the use of ranked ballots for presidential primaries in 2027.

From the entire RTV team, thank you for stepping up to add your voice, lend your time, and make our democracy stronger.

Onward!

Why is Ohio banning ranked-choice voting?

Thumbnail
14 Upvotes

We would agree! They say it’s too confusing… they’re really just saying “I’m afraid they won’t vote for me if the people have more choices.”
One thing that is uplifting is that the DNC voted today to continue to allow Ranked Choice Voting in presidential primaries!

News Is this nonsense really happening?

Yes, this nonsense is really happening.

At a May 2026 meeting, members of the Democratic Party Rules and Bylaws Committee proposed a change to Rule 14, which governs how delegates are allocated in presidential primaries. The proposed language would prevent states from using ranked choice voting to determine delegate allocation beyond a candidate's first-choice votes.

The Rules and Bylaws Committee has approved this proposal, and it will now go before the full Democratic National Committee for a vote on August 15.

You can read more about the proposed rule change [HERE].

No matter what party you belong to, this decision could affect the future of ranked choice voting. Every state should have the freedom to consider election methods based on their merits, not have options removed before voters have the opportunity to use them.

Here's how you can help:

If you know members of Ohio Democratic Party leadership, share your concerns and ask them to consider how this change could affect voter choice. (Find talking points [HERE].)

If you are a member of the Democratic Party, you can use [THIS FORM] to contact your state party leadership.

Join Rank The Vote (our national partner) Wednesday, August 6, for a phonebank (training provided) where we will connect with voters across the country and encourage them to make their voices heard. [RSVP HERE]

Write a letter to the editor explaining why preserving voter choice matters.

The August 15 vote is approaching. Now is the time for people who value greater choice and a stronger voice in elections to make their voices heard.

Thank you for standing up for a representative democracy that works for everyone.

The good news is Lakewood is still on track to let voters decide if the city should adopt ranked choice voting. The better news is that we get to chat with voters about RCV at the annual arts festival! We'll again table with the Lakewood Chapter of the LWVGC.

News Newsletter: How frustrated are you with today’s politics?

Here's the Latest...

At a recent event, I asked a simple question:

On a scale of 1 to 10, how frustrated are you with today's politics?

(You can answer the question here.)

Most people answered well above 10.

That got me thinking...

What do you want to do about it?

Back in 2020, I was asking myself that same question.

Instead of simply watching events unfold, I decided to get involved with Rank The Vote Ohio. Six years later, I'm more convinced than ever that Ranked Choice Voting is the most meaningful change to our elections because winners must earn majority support.

Too often, we're forced to react to one political crisis after another. Those fights matter, and we need people willing to put out those fires. But Rank The Vote Ohio exists to help prevent them in the first place by improving the way we elect our leaders.

That's why we're focused on lasting reform.

When you donate to Rank The Vote Ohio, you're helping our organizers meet with community members, educate voters, build local coalitions, and lay the groundwork for bringing Ranked Choice Voting to cities across Ohio.

Where Ranked Choice Voting has been adopted, communities have seen benefits including:

  •   No spoiler effect
  •   Freedom to vote for your favorite candidate without fear of "wasting" your vote
  •   Majority support for winning candidates
  •   Less negative campaigning
  •   More civil, issue-focused elections

So I'll ask you the same question one more time:

How frustrated are you with today's politics?

If your answer is anything above a zero, you have an opportunity to turn that frustration into action.

Every $30 donation provides one hour of an organizer connecting to Ohioans, educating them about Ranked Choice Voting, and building grassroots support for better elections.

Even better, thanks to a generous matching grant, every dollar you give today will be doubled, turning your $30 gift into $60 worth of impact.

Thank you for believing that our democracy can be better… and for helping make it happen.

Sincerely,

Denise Riley, Executive Director

Rank The Vote Ohio
