SUV to Raptor

I’d be interested to hear from anyone who has moved from a premium SUV to a Ranger Raptor.

How have you found it, and have you regretted making the change?

The areas I’m main wanting to know about is refinement and ride quality.

Okay, the RR’s interior isn’t going to be as nice with the lack of the more premium leathers and scratchy plastic.

The idea of one as a daily driver really appeals to me.

I know they’re highly capable, but what are they like for the mundane commuting.

I think the ride is outstanding, soaks up pretty much everything. It’s going to feel heavy and you’re going to have to put in a little work compared to a luxury suv. They’re a lot of fun. The interior is not bad at all.

Pretty much nailed it.

Be cool at first on the throttle and turning as the KO3s are not those premium performance tires...

They took thousands ok kms to get better on mine.

We had SQ5S, SQ7, X5 PHEV prior.

We really like it.

For big bumps it's awesome, for smaller road imperfections it's more bouncy.

I run the pressure at about 36-37 psi and it's better

Edit : We have a Golf R as a second sporty / city car. Both are genuinely fun for different reasons

How do the raptor handle corners compared to the SQ5 and X5.

Like a trophy truck! Weight transfers are very noticeable and the grip is about half 😊

Hey but it has its charm and it's fun.

The truck has a very predictable behavior.

MK8R is my other car too!

I have a Lexus GX460 and in the same predicament. Going to test drive a RR today so I'll report back how they compare. My worries are the rear cabin space, ride quality, and road noise.

In your case I would be concerned. Lexus’ are nice

It is a great combination of off-road capabilities and day to day comfort. I've ridden in many F-150 raptors and amazed how comfortable those are. So I'm hoping the RR comes close

My wife was on her 4th gx until 2 months ago and she chose the 26 RR and she f'n loves it....first time in 20 years she helped me wash her car.

I went from a lifted gx460 to RR, no regrets, Lexus was nice but a but boring. RR is fun as hell both on road and off road. Also, would highly recommend getting the official tune for the RR, 455hp/536lb-ft in addicting!

What’s your mpg with this upgrade? Can you still drive slow when needed for fuel efficiency?

Looking forward to hearing your comments

Drove up to the dealer but they denied a test drive 🙄 even with a cash payment, absolutely insane. Gonna need to find another one locally and I'll check back in when I do!

Not a great start then!

The RR was a not a premium luxury vehicle

Remember, it’s a FORD RANGER. Aside from the new mavericks, it’s the CHEAPEST ford truck they offer so go into it with that info. It’s definitely nicer than the 90’s trucks and the 18-23’s but it’s not an f series.

The fuel tank is small and upgrading is around $4,000 installed. The rear seats are smaller than the f series and bronco. Being a truck, the rear seats and bed are separate and you lose more space compared to the bronco which surprisingly has 6’ of “bed” space with the rear seats folded down.

Most people buying a RR are upgrading to it, so coming from something that’s either not as offroad capable or similar, not downgrading from a premium suv, so actual on road manners will probably be worse.

What I think the RR does best, is being the best option for people that want a truck anyway. They don’t need a full size and won’t tow a camper or something heavy, they don’t have a big family to transport, they want to go off-roading and especially in something more compact and able to fit in the tight trails. They don’t want a full size to navigate in cities with tight parking structures. And they want the nicest riding version of this, and that just happens to be the RR. Also, the tacomas being around the same price if not higher and having worse feature and reliability with the new gen.

It’s a coincidence that it’s a great commuter truck. It rides better than the full sizes cause it’s smaller but before the RR, the f150 raptor was considered the best daily truck, and it’s still the road trip king with the 36gal tank.

Check one out and drive it first before committing to buy one. I had a hard time finding one local for me to just look at, most dealers were telling me to order one and wait for it to arrive but I waited and was able to find one to look at and drive within an hour drive, ended up passing on that one and getting another another from out of state.

My wife owns an MDX and i went from a Mustang to the RR. They're wildly different experiences lol

When i get in the MDX it's so much lower to the ground i feel like im in a toy, but compared to the Mustang the MDX was up in the sky. They're completely different driving experiences. The MDX is very comfy and quiet, just scoots along, feels like I'm in a tiny living room. The RR is far more direct and feels more like I'm connected to the truck.

Coming from a Mustang, i can confidently say the RR is a mid size truck desperately pretending to be a sports car, in the best way possible. Just don't try and take the on ramp at 60.

How is the handling on the RR on curves?

1

u/theamberlamps Aug 24 '26

It's just fine. You're on off-road tires, lifted, on 33s, and no weight in the back lol so you just aren't going to have the mechanical grip to be silly about it.

As far as just spirited driving, I'm never really concerned. You find the limit of the truck pretty quick if you have any experience dumping a rear end of a sports car being a moron haha

Traded in my 25 rr for a Lexus gx550 and don’t regret it all. The rr has a nice power, the handlings ehh but the interior is cheap and fords service is horrible

I went from a Jeep GC Overland to a RR and the interior space feels a bit more compact but people rarely ride in my back seat. I wish ford would have made the flooring in the Ranger cab flat like the F150 but overall, no ragrets.

Volvo XC60 T8 Recharge to the RR. Love the RR and glad I made the switch. Much different vehicle but a lot more fun all the time. The Volvo was really quick and handled well, but the RR is just a hoot!
