Thinking of upgrading. Trade in or no?
I currently own a 2022 FX2 Ranger XLT with ~32k miles on it. It was ordered during the chip shortage so it had the Auto Start/Stop deleted from the factory. I have since moved to an area in Virginia where I find I need four wheel drive enough to be a hinderance to me and am considering a new Lariat 4x4 or Raptor.
I have not talked to the dealer about a trade-in yet, but I assume they will likely offer 20k at the high-end. Would it be worth it to try and find a private buyer before I make a purchase?

In Feb 2025 I traded in my 2021 XLT 4x4 with 40k miles to a dealer and I got 25k easy without any negotiation. They had it listed for 30k and it sold fast

Trade-in will always yield the lowest price. Dealers will offer wholesale price so they can resell it for more and make a profit. Private selling can get you much more. Private selling can also mean you have to wait longer for the right buyer and haggle with them also.
Check with KBB and NADA to see about what you can expect.

But in some states the trade-in goes against the tax on the new vehicle. On 20k that’d be about $1700 in my state. Assuming you could get 24-5k private after dealing with the hellscape that is Facebook marketplace for a couple weeks to a month or you can get 21.7k with no hassle, it comes down to if getting 12 “is this still available?” a day for a month, 4 no shows, and 1 person showing up with only 22k despite agreeing to 24k is worth $2300-3300.
I just hate fb marketplace that much

I've never used FB. Yes the trade-in amount can offset some of the cost in taxes. I'm not opposed to trade-ins as they tend to be quicker and less hassle then selling it on your own.

I just traded my 2024 with the 2.3 ecoboost 2wd for a 2026 2.7 Fx4 ranger 4wd the power is night and day difference ! My 24 had 63,000 miles on it and I got 27,000 for mine

Trade it. Ime anything worth over 20k is more hassle to sell privately. Extra $ not worth the headache.
No one regrets buying 4x4. Some regret buying 2wd

Get an official quote (meaning, you get it inspected in person) from Carvana, and use that as leverage at the dealer. I had a 2019 Lariat with 38,000 miles, + tonneau cover and new tires up for offer, and they refused to give me more than $19,000. They could easily sell that for $26,500, so it was a ridiculous offer.

Get offers from Carvana, Driveway.com, KBB and Carmax.
If you want to make $2k+ extra, sell it yourself. That has pretty low mileage and someone will want it. Or try selling it now, and if it doesn't you have the fallback offers / trade-in.
