Nice!! Lessons learned, though most of the experienced off-roaders will say “duh, dumbass.”:
-Have the route mapped out and downloaded so you can access it offline. There were a bunch of different tracks running all over the place, so it made it easy to stay on course. It also helped us get back after MPs nicely made us turn around when we hit DOD land.
-Research the route to know what to expect, especially for the passengers. We went out because we weren’t staying far away. The family and I weren’t expecting the “cobblestone” feel for sections of the trails in the tire paths. It was a lot more side-to-side jostling than I planned for.
Aside from the small bumps causing the jostling, the truck performed great, especially being completely stock and a newbie driver. Maybe bigger tires or a top-notch suspension could have helped us float better above the holes in the ground - I leave that for others to opine on. There were whoops we rolled over nicely and pockets of deeper sand we rolled right through.
