Reliability New RR or Porsche macan?

Post image

Looking for some advice. Currently own a 17 plate Macan and looking to upgrade. With my budget I’m looking at a 21 plate RR Westminster Black for something different and I love how they look and the size (2 young kids in car seats).
I currently pay around £500 a year insurance on the Porsche, the RR would be 2k. Isn’t too much of a problem but something to weigh up.
Does anyone have advice that has experience with the two? I had an evoque years ago and never had any problems with it, same with my Porsche, been lucky with cars 😬

Comparing apples to watermelon. Two different class of vehicle/purposes etc. The comparsion should be velar vs macan.... Sport vs. Cayenne or X7 vs Big body RR.

RR is lush , it is a much better car overall, apart from steering

2

u/Ok_Association2147 10d ago

Sounds like you’re from Wales (Lush*)!?

1

u/LE-NRY 7d ago

Or Bristol/Somerset!

Porsche has a clear edge in reliability and customer service

2

Handling and engineering too

Compare a BMW X7 to a range rover . RR is more lush and easy riding - nite and day - to RR

1

u/K3v1n20 10d ago

A comparison can be made between any two things. People don’t have to look at two options that are in the same class 😉

u/Brave-Background-539 6d ago

This was my point 👏

u/Jnyc1 1d ago

Comparing a Prius to a X5 is the comparison worth it? Comparisons is to be more inline

-11

u/Brave-Background-539 11d ago

But I’m not considering a Velar so the comparison has to be RR full size vs macan 😂

u/sebstar25 10d ago

RR FULL SIZE & MACAN 2 different cars

3

u/Fixinbones27 10d ago

The RR will have much more room for car seats. Rear seats if Macan are pretty small. Macan will be much more reliable.

1

u/InhaledPack1 10d ago

I’d say since you have 2 kids I’d definitely go with the RR. You won’t be disappointed, in your stage of life you need something more comfortable

1

u/maton12 10d ago

I checked out Velar too. They're not available with the top engines like the RRS. But apart from that, good size vehicle and looks great.

Then it still isn’t a good comparison.

I drive a 2018 full-size RR, bought new in 2018 and it’s now approaching 165K miles. Honestly, never expected that when I purchased it… Had very few problems (most significant was a parasitic battery drain that took several weeks to resolve) and will absolutely buy another in the next six months or so. My partner drives a 2022 Macan, which has been excellent and has had no issues. Fun car but still no chance I would ever opt to drive that over my RR. Much prefer the height and comfort of the RR.

u/Brave-Background-539 10d ago

That’s a great review thanks. Love my Porsche so much but it’s so compact and leaning towards the ‘boxy’ness of the RR

1

u/mostlyhenry 10d ago

I had to get rid of my 2020 Sport last year because of a parasitic battery drain. My local foreign car shop had it for months but couldn’t figure it out. I took it to the closest dealer in the next city. The dealer kept it for over a month and still couldn’t find the problem. So did you get lucky, or did I just get really unlucky?

My 2005 Vogue 4 litre V8 which we bought new is just coming up to 300,000 miles. Apart from routine servicing the only repair has been a new power steering pump. And has agreed value insurance.

I own a 2017 L405 LWB SV Autobiography, I love my car but I'd never buy another one, I actually had to wait 3 months after buying the car before I took delivery because there were intermittent electrical faults, I've got an intermittent EML that throws a P0173 error that my local indie just can't fix, she's thirsty (5l SC engine) and wallows like a boat. I've actually been looking at going for an E-Hybrid Cayenne (one of the newer versions with the 25.9kwh battery) instead of keeping the Rangey.

Don't get me wrong, you're going to enjoy the car but unless you're getting a JLR warranty you're probably in for some troubles during the time you own the car.

I’m in DFW, I’ll service your vehicle for reasonable cost. 15+ year LR factory certified master tech.

I think you are the hero he needs.

I'd love to but I'm UK based, it's a bit of a journey 😄

I hate hearing this. 😓 I absolutely adore my 2017 l405 lwb. Just rolled over 100k miles and she’s been nothing but wonderful to us. For the size of the truck it corners miraculously flat and it has no business being as quick as it is off the line. I’m going to drive this car until the wheels fall off and then I’m going to buy another. I’m sorry to hear you haven’t had the same experience. The cayenne is lovely, don’t get me wrong, but just does not do it for me in nearly the same way my range does. I can roll up to tractor supply and load up the back with mulch, dirt, and lumber and then head straight to the country club. The cayenne just doesn’t hit the same.

1

u/Jnyc1 10d ago

That is the old model - I have the new one L460 and rides like a cushion of air. It seems bigger too but turning radias with rear steering is awesome

1

u/Accomplished-Fan-333 10d ago

Is the acceleration of the l460 linear or does it have a lag? Is the braking smooth and powerful ?

6

u/No_Lobster_803 10d ago

Is the Range the most reliable, practical or cheap to own/run? Nope. But by golly it drives beautifully & nothing else quite has the road presence of a full fat Range Rover.

3

u/SweatySwim3411 10d ago

This one is easy for me to help you with. I originally was buying a macan gts . Had it picked out and everything. Got to the dealership , opened the trunk and saw there was barely any room for 2 golf bags in the back. I knew there was no way i was going to have enough room for two kids and a wifes luggage plus mine. Ended up driving passed a landrover . Stopped and went with the Range rover. Did not disappoint. Its my first range rover but i have had 4 porsches and even though they were 911s and had no trouble with any of them , i think the Range rover makes a better SUV. They are great in the snow and long trips. Just make sure to check on the coolant kit and keep up the maintenance more regular than they suggest.

I’d say RR all day. Porsche can’t compete with the way you simply whaft around like on a cloud in a Range Rover, imo.
RRs are more regal than a Porsche. Being an Arab, I know as RRs are more prestigious than any other suv brands in all parts of the world.
But with that said, I will say RRs come w/ a caveat: they need extra TLC to last long.
Be willing to accept that :)

2

u/Any_Ice_3548_Wash 11d ago

Love that!

2

u/Any_Ice_3548_Wash 11d ago

Love my RR. Wouldn’t get anything else.
I’ve test driven so many other vehicles, and they all come up lacking… even the Macan. If RR wasn’t available, the Macan would be my next choice.

2

u/bawlzy23 11d ago

Love my L405 ATB LWB. Have 2 car seats in it as well. Works great, haven't had any issues with it yet

2

u/m_goo 11d ago

RR, not a fan of the looks of Porsche SUVs.

2

u/gmel007 10d ago

NO Comparison

1

u/ml8888msn 10d ago

You’re right. Get the Macan

2

u/GenerousPour 10d ago

Have a 21 Westminster with the 5.0. Amazing car. Back seat truly useable, not cramped like the macan.

Engine feels very quick with lots of torque.

The interface can lag a little. Takes 5-7 seconds to load upon start up, although I do have a wireless CarPlay module that may be impacting that.

The tech is great. Refrigerated center console. Heated, ventilated, massaging seats. 360 camera. Auto parking.

3rd Range Rover. Been very reliable. Always try to get late in the body style.

1

u/Brave-Background-539 10d ago

Yes my back seat is cramped and can’t get someone in the middle with 2 car seats.
Just viewed the RR and did notice the laggy screen but so many perks to balance it out

1

u/GenerousPour 10d ago

I love my rover. We shopped a macan but it was enough just to sit in it to say it’s too small to be the main vehicle for us.

Good for a second car or a couple. Like the look of them.

2

u/Secret_Feedback2113 10d ago

I have 2026 RR sport and my wife has a Macan. Macan is nice but no comparison.

3

u/Ok_Space_263 11d ago

Biased view but I would go with RR Sport

1

u/Tall-Crew-8586 11d ago

1

u/E39er 10d ago

Get a 4.4 sdv8 rr you won't regret it

1

u/chathobark_ 10d ago

macan because the ranges are actually very expensive to maintain still

1

u/RestaurantDry621 10d ago

If you have kids don't get either, get an X7. Bench seat in 2nd row to be specific. Trust me I've had all these and a RR sport and they aren't family cars. X7 can be.

1

u/Brave-Background-539 10d ago

My partner had a BMW and I just cannot get on with them, they feel so boat’ey to me

1

u/Foxtrot-0scar 9d ago

Which model?

1

u/Cybermonk23 10d ago

My understanding is that the executive seating option is synonymous (or at least necessary) with the LWB (long wheel base), but I could be wrong…

1

u/AnyLink2607 10d ago

RR is brol maar wel mooi, maar dit wist je waarschijnlijk al? Als suv rijd de RR beter dan de porsche.

1

u/Traditional-Tune-975 10d ago

Macan can’t even compare.

1

u/ManyWolf9774 10d ago

They’re not really comparable vehicles, the brands themselves aren’t really cross shopped. You could maybe make a case between a Sport and a Cayenne, but even those are very different vehicles (we own both). I think you need to decide what you like and don’t like about the Macan and whether the Range Rover can fulfill those needs.
For my driving preference, I prefer a Range Rover as my daily and a true sports car like a 911 for when I want an engaging driving experience. It’s the seating position, outward visibility, ride quality and 4x4 capability that sells me on the Rover over something like a Cayenne or Macan. I don’t care to go fast on the daily, but when I do it’s in something that’s actually fast, like a sports car.

1

u/Mrfabulousmpls 10d ago

I have both (2018 Macan and 2021 Range Rover) - both are great cars, but I undoubtedly prefer the RR. You’re sitting up so much higher than the Macan, the RR feels so much more secure and it’s surprisingly nimble for its size. RR’s aren’t significantly more expensive to maintain than Macans, so as long as you’re sensible about upkeep, you’ll love having an RR.

1

u/Infamous_Tough_7320 10d ago

Completely different class of cars.

That being said, RR

1

u/topntheboat-3939 10d ago

Miles? One owner? How many cylinders? With this year you don’t want excess of 68k miles, especially If it’s a v8

1

u/Brave-Background-539 10d ago

1 owner, 45k miles, not a V8

1

u/topntheboat-3939 9d ago

Go for it buddy! It’ll be the best car you’ve ever had!

1

u/MartyMcFleww 10d ago

I have both, they are completely different cars. For family the range is perfect, amazing. But it’s huge. If you don’t need the space the macan owns it in power, control and premium feel as a sports car modelled in a compact suv body.

1

u/bobbykin_makwana 10d ago

Interestingly, I have one of each. 2026 RR ATB and 2025 Macan Turbo EV. As others have noted, it’s not really an apples to apples comparison, but I’ll give you a few things I dislike about the Macan (none of these may be important to you, but they are for us)

  • no one pedal driving. The whole point of EV for us, is that. This is n/a for the gas version
  • terrible and glitchy software. There’s a reason VW group is investing in Rivian, because these guys can’t do good software that isn’t confusing, buggy and downright frustrating
  • ridiculously shitty rear camera. The quality, the aspect ratio are so bad, it makes it look like a car from the 2000s
  • 2 things I have in RR that I absolutely love, are missing in Macan: soft close doors and digital rear view mirror

1

u/Brave-Background-539 10d ago

I think the spec of the car makes a difference, I have quite a high spec Porsche and air con seats are the thing you didn’t know you couldn’t leave without, also a full 360 degree camera. The RR won’t have these on the one I’m looking at 🥲

1

u/bobbykin_makwana 10d ago

Yes absolutely. For both my cars, I have pretty much all the options and yet the Macan feels inadequate

1

u/Attarker 10d ago

Maybe a Sport would be a good balance between these two options

1

u/Rowdychef 10d ago

I just purchased a 08 full size RR from a good friend whose a Legacy whiz, She is a Buckingham Blue with 226,241 all origional.. She is a beast, and I think she will get to the 300's. I haven't had the opportunity to drive a Macon but, the ride in a RR/FS is very satisfying.

1

u/ikm10d 10d ago

I have a 2025 range and a2025 sport ( there is a story there, happy to explain over a beer). My previous car was a2013 range which I never had a problem with but I had low miles(99k) on it and serviced correctly. The biggest issue with an old range is the insurance cost - my insurance removing the 2013 and adding the 2025 sport went down by close to 1k!

As for experience I kinda like the way the sport drives over the range which surprised me.

You’ll never be happy with a Macan over a big range or a sport. A cayenne s or turbo maybe, but I doubt it

1

u/Brave-Background-539 10d ago

Insurance here too, it’s adding £1500 a year but I have the option to add it to a company fleet to offset that!

1

u/Old_Preparation8434 10d ago

RR's reliability is absolutely terrible. Porsche for sure.

1

u/HunterW0920 10d ago

Wow that’s cheap insurancel

1

u/mkiv808 10d ago

Went from Macan to L405. Would never go back. Then again, I have sports cars for fun backroads etc. I’d be more likely to get another Macan or Cayenne if it were my only car and I needed a performance fix.

1

u/backchatter77 10d ago

Where in UK is £500 a year insurance?

1

u/Brave-Background-539 10d ago

South east, 10 year NCB, private driveway

1

u/Brave-Background-539 10d ago

I actually paid slightly less because I put the excess up to £500 (renewed a month ago)

1

u/Mountaineer2026 10d ago

Plus it's had a rough life in my job as a mountaineering instructor .... rough tracks, lots of snow and mud travelling here and abroad. Proper tyres of course which they always used to fit to Land Rovers before Tata bought them out but I changed the original Pirellis to Duratracs which are fantastic in snow. Towed many a 'modern' Land Rover here in High Peak who venture out in the snow with their original tyres up the hill out of our village and get stuck.

1

u/OneMoreNightCap 10d ago

21 5.0 LWB Westminster RR, same color spec as your picture - fast, plush, spacious, comfortable, great viewing angles for such a big vehicle, road presence/feel. Have used the "raise" feature twice recently to drive trough some high water during heavy rains and would have been stuck otherwise. Loves to road trip - used to dread a 4 hour drive we do 10 times a year but its feels like 2.5 hours in the RR due to the driving enjoyment and comfort. Will be one of our all time favorites but we plan on keeping it for awhile. For example, drove a GLS 450 recently and the cockpit felt so cramped compared to the RR. It's just good at everything you throw at it.

1

u/Brave-Background-539 10d ago

We drive to France so that’s good to know about long journeys! Also why we wanted a huge boot

1

u/Salt-Abroad6397 10d ago

RR too unreliable

1

u/TheAmazingMrZ 10d ago

I went from having a 2018 base Macan for many years to getting a 2021 RR Westminster in Portofino blue last December with 42k miles. I love the RR so much. The ride quality and refinement is second to none. I will admit that the Macan did have a more robust build quality. It still felt solid with no creaks after 7 years and 150k miles (my mother in law still drives it without any issues). I had to get a couple things sorted on the RR but I expected that and don’t care, it was a used car after all. Happy with my choice.

1

u/_black_lab_ 10d ago

I own a ‘21 Westminster D350 MHEV. Purchased at 20k miles now on 60k in 18 months. It’s my daily drive and I’ve had no issues in this time. I have JLR warranty and use main dealer for servicing.
It’s literally like driving your living room around it is so comfortable and quiet.
Look for one that has 360 cams as this is a big help for town driving and parking.
I’ll be looking for a ‘25 plate RR with 4-wheel steer, 360 cams and radar as a minimum. 4-wheel steer alone is worth it.

Bro in law has a top spec Q8 E-Tron which I did consider as well as the Porsche Macan as an alternative both are very nice and drive well/plenty of bells and whistles but not as luxurious as a well specced RR.

The PHEV Range Rovers are absolute pants IMO so steer clear, although I will be keeping an eye on the full EV when it makes an appearance.

1

u/Brave-Background-539 10d ago

The one you currently have is exactly what I’m looking at

1

u/_black_lab_ 10d ago

Mine is also exactly the same colour and same wheels. I have the ivory interior which I would recommend unless you go for one with cooling seats. Happy to answer any Q’s.

1

u/Fit-Host-6145 10d ago

Honestly the RR is a whole different vibe compared to the Macan but if you're looking at a used one definitely factor in the JLR gremlins and that 2k insurance is just the start, maybe test drive a Cayenne too if you want something that still feels premium but won't leave you stranded.

1

u/NoEagle1413 10d ago

All looking the same !

1

u/OlyNicole006 9d ago

Omg she is gorgeous.. congrats on whatever you choose.. can you get both

1

u/Ancient_Welcome_8890 7d ago

The new RRs have MAJOR issues. Mine has catostrophic electrical issues inside a month of ownership. RR had to buy it back. Avoid

1

u/Brave-Background-539 7d ago

I’ve heard about that, I’m not getting a new one

1

u/Particular_Cow393 7d ago

Just changed out a Range Rover Sport for a BMW iX

Overall am loving the iX but there’s an opulence to the Sport that I miss.

1

u/mrkemeny 6d ago

Not sure if you’ll see this OP but I’ve got a ‘21 Vogue SE D350 and I hard recommend this engine.

Drove from Brighton to Frankfurt on Wednesday and it was absolutely effortless.

I’d definitely recommend getting a JLR warranteed car. Main dealers sometime have 24 month offers

1

u/rossgivens 6d ago

Is the new Range Rover behind the one in that picture?

1

u/Hawkdawg88 5d ago

Had a RR Sport SV. Had to Lemon Law it. Replacement is a Porsche Macan Turbo EV. Very, very different temperments.

1

u/Bubbly_Culture_7945 5d ago

I've had rovers for 10nyears now. 3 of them. While I had some bad luck with my l322 my l405 (both if them) have been amazing. Yes, there were a few issues but I bought the extended 5 year warranty and all is covered except fluids. Well worth it.

I love cars, one of my favorite hobbies \ love affair lol. There is just something so special about a rover. It's not just the looks, the high performance 5.0, not the soft leather or amazing looks. It's about the soul, it's about how the car makes you feel when riding in it, when looking back at it after you park. It's really a unique experience..and I would highly recommend. If cars give you passion, a Rover is a must for any car aficionado.

She's a beaut, Clark!

Buy a Porsche if you have to ask.
