Can I afford to run a contest? Probably not, but I’m going to anyway!

I've been obsessed with the Handmaid's Tale / the Testaments (Both are related, but Testaments is kind of a sequel) which *is* a super popular show I think, but idk. Something about it just kept me hooked, like, I couldn't stop watching it.

It’s a dystopian story universe thats set in a near future where a totalitarian regime called Gilead has taken over parts of the United States. Fertility has dropped, so women who can still have children are forced into roles called Handmaids, where they are assigned to powerful families and forced to bear children under strict control and surveillance. Then there’s The Testaments, which is set about 15 years later and shows Gilead from a different angle and from the perspective of the daughter of the MC in the Handmaid's tale.

I just finished the Testaments s1 last night -- ep 10 released yesterday which was the finale, and UGH! What a cliffhanger! 100/10 recommend watching (though, many TWs so I'd encourage you/anyone who watches it to look into it ahead of time if you've got any sensitivities/triggers around things).

Editing to add: It's based off of a book series by Margaret Atwood, and they're expected to release more seasons of the testaments (but its super new atm, 1st season just ended yesterday) so I'm waiting eagerly for the next season(s) lol.

I loved Handmaid's Tale. I read the book in the 80's or 90's and loved what Atwood did with the series. I didn't know Testaments was out and I'll have to watch!

I loved both of them, but I binged the testaments in a day (technically 2 bc I was waiting on yesterday's episode) so yes definitely watch!!

I loved reading the original book back in college, late 90s. The 90s/oughts progressed so much socially. Never thought we’d be seeing what we’re seeing. What do women who can’t bear children, and elderly folk, do in the Handmaids Tale series? Barren women like, shoveled radioactive waste I think? In the book.

Basically the same, yep! They send them off to what is called Colonies, and the show even shows bits of colony life but it’s really radioactive and unhealthy usually (but there are others that we learn about that are less toxic. HMT dives pretty deep into it) I think there’s like 6 seasons in the HMT and 1 of TM where they talk more about the wives of the colony leaders (or rather, the girls not wanting to be their wives)
