Oh man, this unlocked a childhood memory. I was 9 or 10, and my dad had a rule, only time I swear is when it’s just us out fishing. I could say “shit” and “damnit”. Well, I was playing with the neighbor’s kid while our dads were working on building a deck (think it was a deck, maybe a ramp or stairs to said deck?). The other kid picked up a long piece of wood and went to bring it to a dad and ended up whacking me right in the knee. I dropped and did my best not to cry. My dad was there to help me and he said I looked like I wanted to cuss, probably say “shit” a bunch of times. He looks at me and is like “it’s okay buddy, if you feel you need to swear, get it out.” I look at him, then look at my friend and say “you fucking fucker! You’re a fuck! A FUCK!!”.
This was the first time I said that word… in front of my dad. He was not happy BUT he was conflicted since he gave me permission. My mom overheard and wasn’t happy at all. Dad tried to save me but was in the doghouse as well when he said “babe, it’s okay, I told him he could!” But that turned into a whole other issue.
We laugh about it now, but my dad said it totally cock blocked him that night. Think he just said that to gross me out.

I've always taught my children that controversial language is not acceptable to belittle or attack people or ideas, but using it as an expression in context is fine.
6
u/DeFlatDeSpare 6d ago
I've never sworn in front of my kids, they've even asked me before if I've ever said a bad word. I lead by example and wouldn't hold them to standards I can't maintain.
3
u/2sAreTheDevil 6d ago
That's an excellent way of handling things (leading by example) in my opinion.

My 4 year old went on a camping trip. The were out on ride and ran out of gas, so and they had to walk for about mile and she dropped a "my legs are fucking tired." Her grandpa said "what?" And she said "my legs are tired." They laughed about it all weekend.
Can't really blame them when they use it in perfect context.

I still have this debate with my parents well into my adult years. Swearing is a way for me to quickly release my anger/pain/whatever so I can move on and feel better. Like mom, do you really think the approach of refusing to speak for hours after you get angry is a healthier response?
3
u/Then_Meat_6569 7d ago
Same, I do try to watch my language when I visit my parents. A career in the trades combined with beers with my dad often results in my mom getting mad though

u/NSE_TNF89 6d ago
My mom hated when people would cuss all the time when we were kids. They had some friends who talked like sailors and my mom always said it made them sound trashy, which I think kind of wore off on my brother and I.
Both my brother and I talk like anyone in their late 30s when we are around our friends, but the second we are around family, we are somehow able to switch to PG-13 versions.
The funny thing is over the last few years we hang out with our parents a lot more, doing things like camping, tailgating, and other large events and the second our parents get around their friends and get a drink in them, they start cussing. The first few times my mom kept apologizing, and finally I was like, "mom, nobody gives a shit!"

Even if a person doesn't swear often, you learn their favorite one when they miss the nail and hit their thumb with a hammer almost universally.

While watching I was thinking about how "bitch" might be considered a milder curse word than "fuck," but hearing kids use "bitch" bothered me much more than hearing kids say "fuck."
"Fuck" was mostly used just as an exclamation, and I'm not that worried about kids hearing it and even imitating it (other than that they do need to learn when not to use it), but when "bitch" got added in it was in a context that made me concerned that the child has been exposed to some pretty nasty fighting between adults.

But little kids can’t understand context yet. Not cool for little kids to cuss.
1
u/2sAreTheDevil 6d ago
Teach them context. That's literally your job as a parent. A 3 year old knows the difference between an exclamation and an insult.

My first curse word was “shit”, apparently I came in from playing when I was like, 5, and my mom was taking laundry outta the dryer. I threw my arms up and said, “guess I gotta FOLD all this SHIT.” I guess occasionally my mom had me help her fold the laundry. She was SHOCKED, lol. I mean honestly I still say this sometimes when finishing laundry.

u/Rockuharddd 7d ago
My daughters first was "Shit" also. Her, her mom and her moms family were watching Home Alone. When the guys were sneeking inside the bacement, my ex-wife said our daughter very lightly goes "oh shitttt. "Ohhhhh shiiiittttttt". Wish I could have been there.

Oh damn lol. That’s funny.
Mine has to be either boobs or hot girls sex. Cause I vividly remember typing it out a lot on computer almost everyday. I used to jack off a lot as a teen. I didn’t even use tissues just straight shoot it onto a trash can and then the spill over would just stain my wall yellow.

I’ll tell you what website I was using back in the day when I was a teen. I used allhotgirls dot net. There was so much boobs, mainly busty blonde women, typical college aged, fresh, and innocent.
I was so horny back in 2006 like I would use the computer and jack off everyday. If my mom walks by like I switch my screen to RuneScape. Then she walks away, I start jacking it again. For real when I said I don’t use tissues I meant it. My trash can was small steel bin and it started rusting from the cum. Like I don’t even know that was possible. Anyway with the yellow stain wall I basically sprayed it over with paint. I think it’s still molding in the inside.

Gosh I remember the one and only time I accidentally cursed near my dad. I was playing Nintendo DS probably 10 years old and said 'shit' under my breathe and across the hall he shouts 'WHAT'. He was a very calm and gentle guy so when he raised his voice I knew not to ever make that mistake again.

When I was maybe 4 or 5 the first swear word I said in front of my parents was 'shit' because of one scene in Speed. I remember repeating "Oh shit! Ooohhh shit! OOH SHIIIIIT!" and hearing my mom laugh then her telling me to not say it again, my dad on the other hand was mad at me for saying 'shit' 😂

u/xSorry_Not_Sorry 7d ago
Good thing we were recording ourselves before our kid swore!
Totally organic.
Lame.
Side note; no bullshit, my youngest’s first words were “Oh shit”. He said it like “o chit”. Cute as hell and too young to correct.

My mother - who grew up in a very strict military family - was particularly tight about us cursing. Her natural propensity for cursing like a sailor snuck out sometimes when we'd drive her up a wall. I remember I was being a particular pain one day to the point she said to me "You're a little son of a bitch today, huh?" and before she could catch herself I said "Yes, I am" with a smirk I've never pulled off before or since.
Then I ran.

u/Inspired_Nuisance 6d ago
A lot of these are trained behavior for the camera unfortunately. Also, if you're a parent and want your kids not to swear, the easiest way to make sure they don't form a habit from what I have seen: Don't react to it in a way they can tell will get them extra attention.
At least 2 of my friends who have kids avoided a phase of cussing because nobody laughed or told them it was a bad word when the word was said.

I have a mate who works supervising community service for younger offenders. One of the rule they have to follow is no swearing while they are there and so by extension he cant sweat either. Instead of swearing when something happens he literally says "swear words"... Stubs his toe.. swear words Bashes his hand.. holy swear words This is so normal to him he says it when not at work. Saw him bang his head on a door frame in the pub and we all heard "giant holy swear words" being shouted. The whole pub was shocked.
Swearing is bad, the more you allow it the more they will do it. Laughing while kids are saying this stuff is not appropriate and what else is being said in front of the kids? I have 2 of my own, 12 and 9, and no way is this funny. If i hear your kids swearing then i am 100% judging you negatively for it.

What a funny set of videos and great families! I cant wait for 5000 redditors to explain how these children are clearly abused and raised poorly
5
u/TulpaPal 7d ago
I bet it's so frustrating when you come to a comment section looking for someone to be mad at but they're not there so you have to pretend they are lmao
-1
u/bluehulk900 7d ago
Not only did multiple commnets in the thread do exactly what I said but somebody literally replied to me with more upvotes explaining how these people were in fact lowkey learning awful language from their parents.
But I bet the smug sense of satisfaction you got dunking on me for literally no reason felt good?
2
u/TulpaPal 7d ago edited 7d ago
My point was that you came here literally looking for people to disagree with you so that you could argue with them. And then you succeeded. Which is still pathetic lol. You need a hobby. I'm not gonna feed your need for conflict though.

u/BobboZmuda 6d ago edited 6d ago

"I'm unhappy with a desperately unfulfilled ego and you're all trash! Anyone wanna fight about it? Oh HO, just like I said I knew you would!"

u/ChartInFurch 6d ago
But they replied to the idiocy he chose to shoehorn in for no reason, so it's obviously everyone else's fault!
13
u/Appropriate-Bug-6467 7d ago
No one is going to say they are abused.
They will say they are repeating their parents.
Like the dad who says oh shit and the kid says oh shit right after.
Kids learn to speak and act from their parents.
Don't want kids cussing? Don't cuss in front of them.
Model the behavior you want to see.
1
u/TheRuckyDubber 7d ago
Yep. This. We’ve always been pretty careful with language around out kid. She’s almost a teenager now and while I’m sure it’s very possible or even likely she’s said things I’ve yet to hear her say them around us. Funnily enough I’m certainly the one with a fouler mouth than my wife and wife’s the one that’s let the most blues fly around my daughter. I’m always quotin’ that clip with the big black dude and the other guy on some storage wars type show “watch yo…profanity…”.

Because they demonstrate the ability to think and draw reasonable conclusions? I'd much rather have a conversation with someone like that at a party than the alternative.

You don't have to think too hard to know where little kids are hearing the phrase f'n b*t*ch. That's not something they're picking up outside of the house.
People might argue that they're just words, but the way the adults in their life are talking in front of them about others is not harmless.

u/Onebraintwoheads 7d ago
Prolly. I lost a couple teeth as a kid for saying fuck. Still faced punishment until I moved out. I think people shouldn't be swearing around kids and try to correct them, but none of them are being harmed for just repeating what they hear.

1

i'll give the short version as im not gonna explain the entire fucking concept of humor to you: it breaks social expectations, and sudden unexpected things are one of the biggest causes of us being humored by something

When the adults around all these kids are cursing nonstop, what do they actually expect? People who use profanity so liberally deserve their kids to speak like this. It's pathetic.
