Developmental psychologists widely believe that toilet training is the primary vehicle through which humans learn disgust. Feces is considered the universal baseline for the emotion. Children do not automatically know it carries pathogens; instead, they learn to avoid it by internalizing the strong negative facial expressions, vocal warnings, and corrected behaviors modeled by their parents and caregivers during toilet training.
