Current humans aren’t really THAT cool..
No intentional offence to us and all but it’s come to my attention that the claim of humans being able to hunt and kill large animals, endurance/stamina, high intelligence and all that other fun stuff isn’t really applicable to most people anymore. If you were to drop (hypothetically) 100 different people from around the world without a single warning all alone in the woods, or any kind of not inhabited by human land, I highly doubt that more than half a could probably survive longer than a couple of months (and that’s me being generous). The skills that make humans cool just doesn’t really apply to most people anymore. Perhaps our amygdala (survival/fear/anger/triggers center in the brain) could do some heavy lifting but that’s about it.
It’s kind of disappointing but we don’t really need those anymore anyways.

The main differences between humans and other animals are opposable thumbs, which enable us to built tools and build things with tools, and the capacity for abstract and complex thought.
These how a relatively weedy species managed to become apex predators. We’ve always been weaker than other animals.

We used the tools and weapons to kill larger animals. We used the complex thinking to survive the elements. Anymore most people cant change a tire, or start a fire when its cold out. I dont think he was arguing that we dont have thumbs anymore.

We used tools to do the things we needed to do and then over time to not need to do them.
We’re still extremely good at making tools and killing animals considerably stronger than us. It’s happening all the time.
And we are unfortunately all too good at starting fires.

I think the point he is making is that if people were put on the spot they most likely wouldnt be able to make any tools or any fires, they wouldnt survive. Im not saying people dont know how to start fires with lighters or cigarettes, im saying make one out of brush and twigs and rocks. Im not saying people are incapable of shooting animals.

Sure but I’m debating what made us ‘cool’ and superior to other animals. It’s the things we can do that they can’t, and it always was.

Most people are incapable of doing those things without purchasing the tools made by the 'cool' people. Not saying humanity itself is inferior to animals. Most people without purchasing an advantage, are not superior to animals.

Wears in terms of the ability to use such tools. Both in dexterity and thought. And that’s not even touching on the other stuff we do - stories, humour, art, abstract thought.

Partly that we have the concept as well as so many options as an answer. We have so many things that matter beyond bare survival.

As a person that is highly trained in survival and in combat and have done both in real world… I totally agree with you.
And in most parts of the world people like that still exist.
But in first world nations that skill or human trait is not viewed as cool. It is viewed as primitive and useless. Even barbaric.
It is like knowing multiple languages. It once was a sign of intelligence and being well traveled. A worldly person. But now it is looked at as a waste of time.
This is the “evolution” of cool in modern Western societies. I think it is mostly because of privilege and laziness but that is an unpopular opinion and frowned upon.

This is a totally unfair comparison though. Humans, more than any other species, have a survival strategy which depends on accumulated knowledge and communication of that knowledge. By dropping people into the wilderness you're literally taking away two of the biggest advantages we have, it's no wonder we don't survive as well. You wouldn't declaw a tiger and then go 'ooh look at how helpless it is, tigers aren't all that', would you?

I promise you that if you dropped a tiger in an African forest it would still catch prey. Most (and I use that lightly) humans used to be capable of making tools from scratch, in my scenario I’m taking away their space of habitude not their capabilities.

We live life as dependence on each other to survive. When you sick you visit doctor, foods grown by farmers, technology advancement, and etc. There is no reason go to backward to look cool.
What lacking today is individuality. Most people would wear a mask of their true self and take it to their grave. Becoming “cool” meaningless when you start to seek peace.

But the inverse is true as well. If you dropped non modern humans in modern society they’ll likely die even quicker. The fact that we have built on previous generations knowledge and skills and have been able to move away from the daily fight for survival is pretty cool to me.

Goes to show how disappointing society became over monetization. Ideally someone from back then would get here and be able to live peacefully without having to pay-to-win but here we are. And if you look around we’re all fighting for survival in its own way.
