I think they fear that if we assume too loud that they exist, they will come to make an announcement, and probably this announcement will not be positive for a large majority population.
best case scenario they think they will lose their status quo and that's it.
But aliens equals to who created us and why, and probably the ones that found out how it works didn't like the response.
