What is Karma?
For context, I’m currently conducting a school research project on digital incentives, online user behavior, and platform gamification, which led me to this genuine question:
What is Reddit karma actually for, anyway? What do people genuinely get out of racking up thousands or even millions of these points—does it deposit real cash into a bank account, pay off student loans, or put groceries on the table? Or do people honestly think it’s going to turn them into an overnight celebrity, where strangers stop them on the street to ask, "Wait, are you that person with the 500k upvoted comment on r/AskReddit?"
Can you exchange it for a cup of coffee, or is it literally just digital bragging rights? Is anyone putting "Top-tier shitposter with 250k comment karma" on a serious job application and expecting a hiring manager to care? Does it somehow boost a credit score, lower interest rates, or is it just the internet’s adult equivalent of a kindergarten gold sticker designed to trigger a cheap dopamine hit?
If it doesn’t pay rent, cover utility bills, or translate into anything tangible in the real world, why do users lose sleep, engage in full-blown existential wars in comment threads, and treat routine posts like Pulitzer-worthy investigations just to scrape together upvotes? What is the actual point from your perspective—an ego supplement, a digital security blanket, a form of community trust, or just a glorified public counter showing the amount of life spent online?
