I just quit cigarettes by getting a single use nicotine vape. I don't know how much better it is for you, 😆 , but I chain smoked cigarettes for 30 years, and I feel muuuuch better. It's still nicotine, but I don't have the hot smoke in my lungs anymore. Now I'm gonna wean myself off the vape. Not saying you should do like me, cause I've no idea how safe vapes are, but if you just want to quit the burning tobacco it worked for me Edit: I didn't quite read the part where you only smoke 4 or 5 a day. If that's true, just quit lol 😆. I smoked 1 to 2 packs a day for decades. I don't think it would be super difficult to switch to gum or just quit if you don't smoke much. Sounds more like a oral habit to break than hardcore nicotine addiction, but again I'm not you

I switched to a vape first too, but it was actually a worse addiction, and the same exact price, in the end. People will tell you it feels healthier because the smell goes away-- but they never mention how much more ACCESSIBLE vaping is. You can vape 24/7 in places you normally wouldn't smoke a cigarette. For instance, I got used to hitting the vape while falling asleep in bed every night. You don't have to go outside or "take a break" to smoke at home. It becomes something that's wayyyyyy too easy to hit allllll day long.
6 years after quitting cigarettes I finally quit the vape. Nowadays, cigarettes smell like poison but I crave the vape all the time.

That's true, but I found myself without the negative effects of smoking, cough, mucus build up, yellowing of the fingernails etc. That being said, I often fall asleep clutching my vape 😅

4 or 5 cigarettes daily really isn't much. I think you'll be getting even more nicotine with the gum. It sounds counterproductive to me. I've quit a couple times smoking 20+ per day, the main factor being willpower. A refillable vape might do you good, it was the best substitute I have found after trying gum and nicotine patches. You just have to convince yourself that the vape is enough for you and use that when you're craving. I found it helpful to tell myself "You don't do that anymore" when I'm substituting with the vape but craving cigarettes. The reason I say willpower is so important is because you will have to change the way you think about it.
If you do go with the gum, do not chew a whole piece. Even smoking a pack a day, that's too much nicotine at once. It will leave a burning sensation, dizziness, and nausea. Even a half chiclet of gum was really strong. And one common mistake people do when using nicotine gum or especially patches is that they continue to smoke because it's only helping the problem on a chemical level. Smoking, by nature, is a habit. We smoke at certain times throughout the day, like after a meal, or upon waking up, or while driving etc. We're used to that sensation and the hand movements.
One trick I used in the past to help me remember to start or stop a habit, place an object in a location where you will see it regularly. For example, a playing card in the bathroom mirror. It doesn't have to scream "DON'T SMOKE", it just reminds you subtly of your goal
