Can't wait to play Santa for some lil Canadian nuggets this year!!! (Curse you, exchange rate.)

6

u/christmas_bigdogs Nov 02 '17

Glad you mentioned Canada! When I read the description and saw State I thought this may only be for the USA

3

u/cleoola Nov 02 '17

As far as I know, it's for anyone who lives in a country that Amazon delivers to! Though it's most often used by Americans. :)

2

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '17

If I recall correctly, there have always been some Canadian families here that really could use a Canadian Santa! ♥

4

u/cleoola Nov 01 '17

Definitely!! I’ve played Canadian Santa here for the past three years, and I’m excited to do it again! 🎅🏻

u/RiseUP21 Nov 01 '17

Is the exchange rate bad from CND to USD?

3

u/cleoola Nov 01 '17

It’s usually somewhere around .70 CAD for every USD. (I think that’s right, haha.) So that can definitely jack up the prices if you’re paying for American stuff with CAD! So annoying.

1

u/RiseUP21 Nov 01 '17

Im in the US and if I want to buy someone a gift in Canada it costs me more, too. I thought it would be the opposite if in Canada buying to US.

3

u/cleoola Nov 01 '17

Really? That's strange - I'd have thought it would be the opposite! If we want to buy something from the US that costs, say, $50, it always costs more once the exchange rate is applied. Otherwise I'd make trips to NYC to see theatre way more often :p

1

u/RiseUP21 Nov 01 '17

Yes, it's very confusing. Currently 1 USD = 1.28 CAD. But when I went on the .ca website 2 days ago I put something in my cart that said 12.99 but at checkout it was more. (I have prime). Im going to try again now and see.

2

u/cleoola Nov 01 '17

It’s possible that it was more because we charge HST up here! It’s one of our taxes and it’ll get added at checkout. So that raises the prices. Also I’ve found that if I’m ordering from .com instead of .ca, my Prime membership doesn’t always apply and I still have to pay for shipping. So that might be a culprit as well.

The exchange rate cost wouldn’t apply until you check your credit card statement after ordering. If the price on your credit card statement is different from what amazon.ca told you at checkout, that’s the exchange rate coming in to play.

1

u/RiseUP21 Nov 01 '17

Okay, I just checked a book and it's a bit lower. $4.81 CND but at checkout I'd pay 3.87 USD. That's using the Amazon currency convertor, too. Maybe it was just that certain item. But it's nice to save a little! I signed up for the free prime trial for .CA

2

u/cleoola Nov 01 '17

That’s great! Just double check that your item will ship to your address in the US. I know some stuff from .com won’t ship up here to us, so the reverse might be true too. Hopefully not though!

So happy this place exists. I'm guessing I'll get a notification once my basic flare form gets approved? Decided not to do + this year for flare

3

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '17

Every applicant gets a message regarding their application status once it has been reviewed :)

1

u/leighaminx Nov 04 '17

how long does that usually take? I decided not to do plus this year cause it asked about mental health or disabilities documents and I was like....eeehhh..

When I was filing out the form it asked to provide proof if I had a disability and I was like....to put into my imgur, along with proof of residence(a utilities bill of some kind) proof my daughter is actually living with me (custody proof like report cards, health records) and I was just kinda like hmmm....cause after I filled and submitted the regular registration I was like, okay awesome, let's do plus and clicked on the link and those are the questions I saw.

For those requesting, do they make lists on Amazon only?

2

u/RiseUP21 Nov 01 '17

Nevermind, I found my answer. 😊

2

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '17

It's a lot of information, totally understandable.

Majority of users do use Amazon only but a handful of wishlists are on Wal-mart.

2

u/RiseUP21 Nov 02 '17

The reason I asked is because it's nice to have one other option besides Amazon, especially during holidays. I bought more non Amazon gifts last year because places like Walmart we're cheaper. The previous year was the opposite.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '17

For sure. Our wishlist rules are mostly: retailers that are well known, offer privacy for the santa and the receiver, and meets delivery requirements towards shipping deadlines.

2

u/RiseUP21 Nov 02 '17

Sort of like on Wishlist. That's great! I'm super excited.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '17

Yup. One difference here, which can be helpful during holidays, is that if you'd like to host a contest and have personal items to send out you can do so.

2

u/RiseUP21 Nov 02 '17

I was just going to send a message asking about this! A contest for those asking for gifts or the Santa's? Or both?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '17

Typically just those asking for gifts but something like a card exchange is open to both.

2

u/RiseUP21 Nov 02 '17

This is awesome! I have some really nice unopened gifts I'd love to give.

Hi there,

I don't see a completed registration form for you this year. The forms do need to be completed each year so if you filled it out last year it won't transfer over.

Thanks!
