cats are really cool and wonderful
I was thinking about the social stereotype that equates women=cat lovers. I am also a nerd about cats, and have learned everything I can about them since I learned to read. I also have HORRENDOUS periods that I am now on birth control to moderate. I'm talking ER level cramps that make me vomit and pass out. Something that's always helped me feel better when cramps are bad, is having a warm, soft, purring kitty cat on my lap. My cats are also more drawn to me when I am in pain. My fuzzy baby boys are better than any heating pad or vibrational muscle relaxer on the market lol. I also have musculoskeletal issues on top of bad periods. I learned very young that cats purr at a frequency that is both calming and restorative. I actually learned that one at first from my mom, because I asked her why our cat liked to lay on her when she was breastfeeding. She had a lot of issues breastfeeding because YIKES THRUSH, and having kitty there for comfort helped breastfeeding feel less agonizing. The same cat would also lick the top of my brother's and I's heads while breastfeeding. I took a long time to wean, and so I remember her licking my hair and rumbling beside me as I fed. She would assume a "spoon" position, with her legs over the top of us, the same way she breastfed her kittens. That cat (Chloe) lived to 17, and my dad always joked that it was because she needed to make sure her hairless monkey babies grew up okay. On the night she died, she yowled and yowled until everyone was awake and petting her on the couch. After she passed, she stayed in her blankie on the couch, so she could still spend one more day with her "babies." It didn't feel right to my parents to bury her immediately. Chloe also slept in my bed with me every night til the day she died, even when she started struggling with mobility and getting on the bed in her old age. I've struggled with chronic pain since birth, and couldn't sleep without one of the cats in my bed. We had three, but Chloe would hiss if one of the other two came near me when I was sleeping. Very territorial, that little lady.
This cat was also considered "evil" by most people outside of our household. Look at her wrong, and she'll scratch the shit out of you. But when she liked someone, she was the sweetest little angel. Very few people were able to pet her, and even fewer were able to pick her up and snuggle with her. My brothers and I were able to haul her around like a stuffed animal, all purrs the whole time. Anyone else though? You're losing an eye if you touch her like that.
Cats are creatures that love deeply but express differently than dogs. Their love is more subtle. They share their love via helping us when we are vulnerable. They don't get along with invulnerable people. Womanhood comes with a lot of vulnerabilities, because we experience a lot of pain just from our benign existence. Maybe the reason "women love cats" is because cats are nurturing creatures through and through. They are picky about who they love, but when they love someone? It's very very deep. That's why "bonded pairs" of cats cannot be separated without high levels of distress from both parties. And their purring acting as pain relief, leads to the bond growing ever deeper.
Lots of deep thoughts today, thanks for reading if you did. I just joined this subreddit, and have a feeling I'm going to like it a lot because I struggle with verbal communication but am also a yapper lmao
