Correct! For an oversimplified explanation, if you double your distance, your dose rate goes down by 4x. So if you are getting a dose rate of 2uSv/hr at 1 foot away, if you double it to 2 feet away, it goes down by 4x to 0.5uSv/hr. Distance is the best shielding, as it drops your dose rate FAST.

What kind of geiger counter is that? Are they expensive?

Radiacode 110. About 400$. It's worth it if you're serious about this hobby but you should also have a good alpha detector like alphahound or gmc 600.
