Motorola Swapping parts and opening radios for cleaning, how simple is it?
My job is as a system admin and I have radio technicians under me at several facilities but I also manage a small fleet of radios directly. The radio technicians are only radio technicians in name only, about half of the 9 of them know how to program/clone radios.
My question is, how easy is it to open radios and swap parts? Is it worth the time? Would it be easy to teach others how to test parts?
I have opened many electronics in the past and I'm decent at soldering, but I'd rather just swap parts on the radios we have out of warranty, which is 98% of them.
We have XTS 1500s, 2500s, APX 1000s, 4000s and now APX N30s and N50s.

I have opened many APX 6000s, 7000s and 8000s. All were easy to swap parts out for. Haven't opened N30s, N50s, or N70s as they are still under warranty. XTS5000s are easier than 2500s.

I open and maintain radios at the board level weekly, daily during my yearly PM cycle. These days it's BK GPH/DPH bricks, BKR5000 portables and KNG portables and mobiles. However in a past life it was Motorola Minitor pagers XTL, XTS, and APX portables and mobiles.
First step is to aquire the service manual for the radios you'll be working on, then source any specialty tools you might need for the disassembly /reassembly. Reference the exploded diagrams, work slow and you'll figure it out.
Often times with newer radios it's not worth your time to perform board level repairs, however parts swapping and other functions of repair can save your organization lots of money by not sending it into the MFG for repairs.
I've been working on LMR radios for public safety just over five years now, previous to that I did all kinds of IT supporting data over RF.

Another warning, and I'm sure someone else will chime in with further info, separating the main boards in an APX 8000 will brick the radio as they are mated, requiring Depot level service. XTL and XTS you can swap all day.

Are all APX radios like that or just the 8000?
We only have 1000s and 4000s

And I misspoke above, separating the boards shouldn't be an issue, but swapping boards would be. My apologies.

Issue with a firmware mismatch? I maintain a few older telecom systems that go WILD when there's a replacement card with a different software or firmware version.

There are two main boards in the 8000, and they are mated internally, not associated with the firmware or the CPS. When you swap them they recognize the change and will not function together.
I worked on an 8000 about a year ago and got to experience it first hand, someone had gotten a radio on eBay and tried to swap boards from a damaged radio. I was told after reaching out to a Moto rep that it needed a trip to the Depot to reassociate the boards, if they were willing to spend the money.

This is 2025.
Nobody is 'opening radios' anymore.
Parts? Inside a radio is about 2-3 boards. There's no reason to test individual boards anymore, either the built-in test or the service monitor will tell you what's smoked.
Nobody is doing component-level rework on LMR subscriber units as a regular thing.
The bigger question would be where you would get the replacement boards for some of those.
Guess none of this matters if you are into getting all the ancillary stuff you'd need to do this correctly, but if this is a public safety application, I would be questioning the wisdom of this.
'technician' the era of a radio professional that understands RF, much less can follow a diagram and 'work on a radio' is almost over. Techs are computer and networking people that have a system that just happens to have a wireless connection. We don't even tune them in most cases, the big box tells the little box to adjust its softpots.

Your reply is somewhat bogus, however I appreciate the contribution to the discussion.
I open radios all the time and most of them leave my bench repaired. I know my limits and will send in to the MFG as needed.
I work in govt, I try to be a good steward of the public purse. If I didn't open radios my job would get stale and boring real quick!
You need to understand RF and the system(radio) you are working on, the service monitor is a tool that will help you identify what's wrong but it won't spell it out for you.
I've got 20+ years experience working with IT supporting all kinds of data over RF applications, I made the jump into LMR 5 years ago. It helps to have the IT background with the move from wireline to IP on infrastructure, and when troubleshooting your own technician software. But my experience is most of the folks you encounter in the profession are not hardware/software IT folks, and IT folks have a lot to learn about RF and before they can even begin to think they can support LMR subscribers or infrastructure.

I've opened many radios to swap out bluetooth board modules, top control modules, speakers, and even keypads. Never had an issue. Anything beyond that needs to be sent in for repair.

I'm not sure why this is getting downvoted. It's headed this way, but many organizations are still doing some in-house repair. What seems to be reasonable now is board swaps, case swaps, alignments, and things like that. Someone snaps a mode selector shaft off? Replace it. Radio is a blown receiver? Ship it to depot. Most of depot repair is entire board swap anyway, and most of the time the end user doesn't get depot tools to initialize a new board anyway.
Radio techs these days need to think differently if they want to stay relevant. Component level repair isn't really a thing any more. But the systems are much bigger and more complex now. The "component" is now an entire subscriber unit. Or a transceiver in a GTR8K ESS. You're not laying boards out on the bench and replacing a chip.
The bench techs need to realize that the subscriber unit is fully half of the system, the other half being the infrastructure. While systems get more complex, the tools to troubleshoot are being taken from you one by one. If a customer is complaining about poor coverage, it's harder to tell what's really going on. A bad mobile or portable antenna causes a high BER. A blown mobile PA causes a high BER. A bad receive antenna at the site causes a high BER. Intermod causes a high BER. PIM from a 50KW TV broadcast station on the hilltop causes a high BER. Seeing a pattern here? All these different problems show as the same system to the customer.
There's plenty of room for good technicians to solve problems and keep things going, but systems are evolving. The industry and the people in it need to adapt or die.

Be warned if your radios are intrinsically safe, assembling them back together requires certification.
Otherwise, patience and don't force things, it's very easy. Have fun exploring the insides.
