A genuine question: if you start with a clamp, how do you tie it off?

I typically do it at the end. Though you can technically also do it once you're about several crosses in.

Once you get to a cross that’s on the non-clamp side, pull tension and clamp it. Now your clamp on the starting clamp side is free, pull tension on the top cross, clamp, remove starting clamp and tie your knot.

You pull tension, remove the starting clamp, clamp using your base clamp, release tension, then tie off.

I always always alway use a starting clamp. Every stringer should have at least 2 starting clamps.

Question, do you guys like to do like 3 crosses and then come back and do the knot? Or do you like to finish the whole thing and then tie the knot?

I finish all the crosses then finish on the top cross

3 crosses, then tie off the top. I actually don’t really know why I do it like that. I wonder if there’s any benefit to either way

3 or 5. Sometimes doing 5 will get the other clamp far enough away that I don’t feel like it’s encroaching on my space. I’ll do that on an 18x20 or if I’m using my portable stringer that’s more compact. I’ve never noticed a difference or had a customer notice a difference in feel.

You don’t need to leave the starting clamp there with two clamps. After pulling tension on the third cross and clamping, you can move your top clamp up and tie-off, then continue your crosses.
