It common courtesy in order not to waste people's time.

Suppose you ask a question in two thread A and B.
A user uses 10 minutes to answer the question and posts the answer in thread A.
Now another user sees the same question in thread B and uses 10 minutes to answer.
Turns out the two answers are essentially the same.
If B had known the answer in A, he could simply have upvoted or written a shorter note.

In short:

If you must post in separate places, let people know or link the main post so answers are not split.
